INTRODUCTION
• Laser beam machining is one of the non-traditional machining process.
• Based on thermoelectric energy.
• Laser beam machining is conversion of electrical energy into light
energy and then into thermal energy.
WHAT IS LASER?

• Laser stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

• Laser is a device that generates an intense beam of coherent monochromatic
light by stimulated emission of photons from excited atoms.

ABSORPTION EMISSION
SPONTANEOUS EMISSION STIMULATED EMISSION
LIGHT AMPLIFICATION
RUBY LASER AND ITS WORKING
• Ruby is a type of solid state laser.
• The principle of this laser beam machining is melting and vaporization.
• Power supply is given to flash lamp consist of xenon, which gives light
to the ruby crystal.
• Laser is stimulated and emitted by the ruby crystal.
• Resonant cavity is useful for enhancing the light amplification.
• Laser is focused by the lens on the workpiece.
• High temperature can be produced.
• Then the metal is melted and vaporized.
ADVANTAGES
• No tooling cost.
• Heat affected zone is very small.
• High surface finish.
• Suitable for all metals.
• No force acts on the workpiece.
• Metals and nonmetals can be machined.
DISADVANTAGES
• Safety hazards
• Low rate of metal removal rate.
• Not able to drill, the deep holes.
• High capital and maintenance cost.
APPLICATIONS
• Spectroscopic sciences.
• Electronics
• Aerospace industries
