What is PLACE VALUE?

● Place value tells us what value.


● Place value is a value
represented by a digit in a
number on the basis of its
position in the number.
Example:

23
Means there are 2 sets of tens on 3 sets
of ones.

The representation simply shown how


to perfectly illustrate the value of a digit
based on its place or position.
The smallest two – digit number is 10. In every
two – digit number, there are two places:

● Tens – placed at the left side, ten times the


original value.
● Ones – placed at the right side, original
value.

Example:

’35’ means 3 tens and 5 ones.


’98’ means 9 tens and 8 ones.
TENS
Tens are made up of ten ones (units).
When you count them you count by tens.

Example:

1 Ten 2 Tens 5 Tens 7 Tens


ONES

The same as counting by ones.

Example:

3 ones 4 ones 6 ones 9 ones


TENS AND ONES

• 10 as ten ones.

• 11 to 19 as ten and some ones.

• Multiple sets of tens.
