LIGHT POLLUTION

SEMINAR BY
ANJU RU
INTRODUCTION

Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials or effects into the

environment. These harmful materials or effect are called pollutants. Light
pollution is one of the fastest growing and most pervasive of
environmental pollution. Light pollution is excessive, misdirected, or
obtrusive artificial (usually outdoor) light. Too much light pollution has
some consequences : it washes out starlight in night sky, interferes with
astronomical research, disrupts ecosystems, has adverse health effects and
wastes energy
What is light pollution ?

Light pollution is the presence of unwanted, inappropriate, or excessive

artificial lighting. In a descriptive sense, the term "light pollution" refers
to the effects of any poorly implemented lighting, during the day or
night. Light pollution can be understood not only as a phenomenon
resulting from a specific source or kind of pollution, but also as a
contributor to the wider, collective impact of various sources of
pollution.
LIGHT POLLUTION
Causes of Light Pollution
1. Excessive use of light
2. Overpopulation
3. Infrastructure planning
4. Garage lamps
5. Light from houses
6. Downtown areas
7. Smog and clouds
8. Cars and other motor vehicles
9. Nighttime-lighting
10. Streetlamps
Effects of light pollution
In humans

Investigations on negative effects of light pollution on human health

found that this pollution can increase the incidence of headache,
migration, stress and anxiety and decrease melatonin production in the
body, which low melatonin levels can increase the risk of specific
cancers
Which animals are affected?
While light pollution affects both nocturnal and diurnal animals, it poses a greater
threat to animals that are active at night. Formerly dark nights are now just as bright
as day thanks to artificial lighting, which leads to confusion and disorientation for
nocturnal creatures.

According to the International Dark Sky Association, the animals most affected by
light pollution are:

• Sea Turtles

• Frogs and Toads

• Humming Birds
•Zebrafish

•Sweat Bees

•Seabirds

•Monarch Butterflies

•Atlantic Salmon

•Zooplankton

•Bats

•Owls

•Mice
TYPES OF POLLUTION

 Over-illumination

 Glare

 Light Clutter

 Skyglow

 Light Trespass
1. Over-illumination

This is caused by the misuse of lights. Lights that are left on, or even street
lamps that aren’t adjusted for daylight savings time, can cause millions of
barrels of oil to be wasted. It can have the immediate effect of raising utility
costs in an area as well as disrupting natural sleep patterns.

2. Glare

Glare is a two-fold problem in which lights are reflected off surrounding

surfaces so that the light scatters and causes vision problems. It doesn’t
interfere with night vision but makes it difficult to identify and place
3. Light Clutter

Light clutter is a uniquely man-made issue, and it stems from poor placement
design. A cluster of business lights, or streetlights, can create a contrast
illumination that interferes with night vision and illumination.

4. Skyglow

This is a term used to refer to the almost dome-like cover of light to city areas.
The light that is escaping from street lamps, signs, homes and businesses goes up
to change the quality of light in the atmosphere, and it bounces back down to the
city from the atmosphere.
5.Light Trespass

Not only is this a form of pollution, but it is also a crime in many areas. Light
trespass refers to unwanted light entering someone’s property. It could be
light from a sign coming into a residential area or any similar circumstances.
HOW TO PREVENT LIGHT POLLUTION

1.Reduce the use of decorative lighting.

2.Use of covered bulbs that light facing downwards.

3.Use LED Light.

4.Minimizing the use of lights.

5.The use of automatic systems to turn off street light at certain times.

6.Have all information and facts about light pollution.

CONCLUSION

• Light pollution is caused by man's own action, witch does not control the

excess. And even though we live daily with this problem, can be controlled.
And foment an education of the correct use of lighting is one way to do it.

• Using LED bulbs reduce the effects of light pollution, and also its durability
is almost double the lights called savers.

• Individually, can be divulge the problem of light pollution, its effects and its
solution as well as report any irrational use of outdoor lighting.
