Hindi Film Industry(Bollywood)
• The Hindi Film industry is currently the largest
and dominates Indian film.
• Based in bombay it is the center of indian film
industry.
• Known popularly as “Bollywood”
- A blending of Bombay and Hollywood

industry in indian. The first national award for
the best film was awaeded to “Shyamchi Aai”
in the year 1954
• Kannada film industry. Based in Karnataka, it
has become popular in recent years with
blockbuster movies.
GOLDEN AGE OF INDIAN CINEMA1950s
to 1960S

• The period from the early 1950s to the 1960s are regarded by film historians as the 'Golden Age' of Indian
cinema. Some of the most critically acclaimed Indian films of all time were produced during this period.

• 50s and 60s were considered as the Golden Age of Indian


cinema
• The first Internastional film festival of indian held in early
1952 at bombay had a great impact on the Indian cinema.
• Among the regional languages, Malayalam cinema derived
much of its strength from literature during the sixties.
• Malayamlam cinema hit the head line for the first time
when Raim Kariat’s Chemmen (1965) won thw President
Gold Mendel.
• Towards the end of the decade, Mrinal Sen’s Bhuvan
Shome, signaaled the beginning of the new wave in Indian
Cinema.
CHHATTISGRAHI CINEMA
• Chhollywood was born in 1965 with the fisrt
chhattisgrahi film KAHI DEBE SANDESH in [Black and
White] Directed and Produced by
MANU NAYAK was Released.
• The next Chhattisgarhi film to be released was Ghar
Dwar in 1971, produced by Vijay Kumar Pandey.
• However, both performed poorly at the box office.
Awards
• The indian government has sponsored the
National Film Awards (which fist began in
(1954), awaeded of Film Festival (DFF).

• The Filmfare Awards ceremony is one of the


oldest and most prominent film event given
for HINDI film in indian [12] and is sometimes
referred to as the “Bollywood Oscars.
Bollywood – The Pioneer of Masala Movies
1970s to 1981s

• Masala films of Indian cinema mix multiple genres into one work. Masala films emerged in the 1970s and are still created as of
the 2020s.
• Typically these films freely mix action, comedy, romance, and drama or melodrama. They also tend to be musicals that include
songs, often filmed in picturesque locations.
• The genre is named after the masala, a mixture of spices in Indian cuisine.According to The Hindu, masala is the most popular
genre of Indian cinema.Masala films have origins in the 1970s, and are common in every major film industry in
India.Production of these films are still active in early 2020s.
• Masala films helped establish many leading actors as superstars in the 1970s and 1980s, such as Dharmendra, Amitabh
Bachchan, Sridevi achieved stardom in their early Bollywood career with masala movies.
• This style is used very often in Hindi (Bollywood) and South Indian films, as it helps make them appeal to a broad variety of
viewers.

1970s
• The 70s completely the way films were made,espescially in HINDI film
indusrty. Changing social norms and changing economies influenced
movie and the companies that made them.

• The narrative style changed. The story structure changed. Characters


changed. Content changed. Masala film were the demand of the time.

• The genre promised instand attraction and had great entertainment value.

• The seventies further-widened the gap between multi-star big budgeted off
beat film.

• Of these majority of the film were action oriented with revenge as the
dominating theme.

• Down in south, the new wave cinema originated in


Karnataka and Kerala. Pttabhi Rama Reddy’s
Samskara (1979) and Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s
Swayamvaram (1972) were the trend setter in
Kannada and Malayalam respectibely.
• This continued with a series of socially conpicuous
films like Chomand Dubi, Ghatasardha, Arangetram,
Chuvanna Vithukal and many more.
Central Board o Film Certification
• For a film to be released publicly it must
receive approval for the board
• It’s guidelines state:
- The cinematography Act lays down that a
film has to be certified keeping the interests of
sovereigny, integrity and security of Indian,
friendly relation with foreigen states , piblic
order morality etc.in mind.
1980s and 90s
• The new cinema movement
continued with full sprit in the next
decade (eighties)also. Shyam Benegal
presented like Manthan, Bhumika,
Nishant, Junoon, and Trikal. Nihalni’s
Aaghat and Tamas were remarkable
work.
• Other important films with new style
of treatment include Damul(Prakash
Jha), 36 Chowringhee Lane(Aparna
Sen), Andhi Gali (Buddhadeb
Dasgupta), Aajka Robin Hood (Tapan
Sinha) etc.

• The new wave masters of Kerala Adoor and


Aravindan, consolidated their position in the 80s
with their films Elippathayam,Mukhamukham,
Anantharam, Esthappan, Pokkuveyli,
Chidambaram, and Oridath.
• Elipthayam won the prestigious British film
Institute award for 1982.
• Shaji N.Karun’s maiden film Piravni (1988)
bagged several national and international
awards and was shown in nearly forty film
festivals.

• The late eighties and early nineties saw the


revival of the musical love stories in HINDI
cinema.
• Mr. India, Tezaab, Qayamat se Qayamaat
Tak,Maine Pyar Kiya, Chandni, Tridev,
Hum,Ghayal, Saudagar, Rakhwala, Jo Jeeta Wahi
Sikander, Heena, Hum Hain Rahi Pyarke, Baazigar,
Aaina, Yeh Dillagi, Hum Aapke Hai Kaun,
Krantiveer, Raja, Rangeela were some of the
popular HINDI film of the last decade.

• 90s was a mixed genre of romantic, thrillers,


action and comedy films.
• A stark upgrade was seen on the canves as
technology gifted the industry Dolby digital
sound effect, advanced special effects,
choreography and international appeal.
• The development brought about investment
from the corporate sector along with finer
scripts and performances.
• It was time to shift focus to aesthetic appeal.
• Stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Rajnikanth, Madhuri
Dixit, Salman Khan, Amir Khan, Chiranjeevi,
Juhi Chawla,etc……..
enriched Indian cinema with their
performances.
