Southeast Asia
The Philippine Revolution (1896–
1898)
It also called the Tagalog War by the
Spanish, was a revolution and
subsequent conflict fought between
the Spanish colonial regime and the
people and insurgents of the
Philippines. The goal of the revolution
was to gain independence after more
than 300 years of Spanish colonial
rule.

Flag of Katipunan(KKK)
The first Philippine flags was
made of red cloth with white
KKK initials sewn in white.
The red color symbolized the
blood of the members of the
Katipunan in which inductee to
the society signed in their
names with their own blood. 4

directly on wall. He was born on November 4,
1912 at Angono Rizal, Philippines. He is known
for his works such as The Blood Compact, First
Mass at Limasawa, Rizal’s Martyrdom and
Bonifacio mural.I think the artist wants us to see
the patriotism of the Filipinos. The revolted
against the Spaniards, who conquer our country
and treat us like slaves. The abuse power of the
Spaniards is huge so the Filipinos revolted against

them. Andres Bonifacio created KKK and fight
Where and when was this made? What was happening around the artist
at the time?

The Filipino Struggles Through History chronicles the history of Manila from the pre-
colonial period to the American occupation. It was among Francisco’s last works of arts
and it was finished months before his death in 1969.It was commissioned by former
Manila Mayor Antonio Villegas for the Bulwagang Katipunan or Office of the Mayor of
Manila City Hall in 1968. Botong Francisco’s work was commissioned in 1964 by the
city government of Manila. It comprises a series of paintings depicting crucial events in
Philippine history, from the arrival of Spaniards in the Philippines, the formation of the
Katipunan, battles in the Philippine Revolution and eventual freedom from American
rule.

Who or what is the subject? How is the
subject Represented?
Andres Bonifacio led the KKK in the
revolution against the Spaniards.
Andres is holding a revolver and an
itak. Some katipuneros used bamboos
as their spear, one has a rifle, another
one has a knife and the others have
their itaks. Also there re flame above
the painting, which I think it symbolizes
the burning of their passion to revolt
against the Spaniards. It means the fire
will be not be easily taken out.

I saw this painting many times. Every time I see this work, I’m proud
to be a Filipino. I feel being patriotic. Because Filipinos fought for our
independence after being conquered for 333 years.
