Autocratic Style
Effective style to use when:-
 New, untrained staff do not know which tasks to perform
or which procedures to follow
 Staff do not respond to any other leadership style
 Limited time in which to make a decision
 A manager’s power challenged by staff
Bureaucratic Leadership Style
 Manages “by the book¨
 Everything done according to
procedure or policy
 If not covered by the book,
referred to the next level
above
 A police officer not a leader
 Enforces the rules
Bureaucratic Style

Effective When:-
 Staff performing routine tasks over and over
 Staff need to understand certain standards or
procedures
 Safety or security training conducted
 Staff performing tasks that require handling cash
Democratic Leadership Style

 Also known as participative


style
 Encourages staff to be a part of
the decision making
 Keeps staff informed about
everything that affects their
work
 Shares decision making and
problem solving
responsibilities
Democratic Style

Effective When:-
 Leader wants to keep staff informed about matters that
affect them.
 Leader wants staff to share decision-making and
problem-solving duties.
 Opportunities for staff to develop a high sense of
personal growth and job satisfaction needed.
 A large or complex problem that requires lots of input
to solve.
 Need to encourage team building and participation.
Laissez-Faire Style of Leadership

 Also known as the “hands-off¨


style
 The manager provides little or no
direction and gives staff as much
freedom as possible
 All authority or power given to the
staff and they determine goals,
make decisions, and resolve
problems on their own
Laissez-Faire Style

 Effective When:-
 Staff highly skilled, experienced, and educated
 Staff have pride in their work and the drive to do
it successfully on their own
 Outside experts, such as staff specialists or
consultants used
 Staff trustworthy and experienced
Some Attributes of Effective Leaders

 Vision:
 The effective leader establishes achievable goals

 Have the strength of character to pursue their objectives

in the face of opposition and extreme difficulties.


 Passion:
 They love what they do with knowledge and skill

 Their passion is a guiding star for followers.

 Effective Communication:
 They Know the art of what to say and when to say.
 Leaders Listen their followers with complete compassion.

 Honesty: Leaders have honesty in both their professional


and personal lives.
 Curiosity:
 Leaders are learners and wonder about every aspect of
their charge.
 They find out what to know in order to pursue their goals.
 Risk:
 To achieve the objectives, leaders take calculated risks
 effective leaders learn from mistake and use as
opportunity to explore other avenues.

 Trust: They earn the trust of their followers and vice


versa.
 Charisma:
 An attribute that is most difficult to cultivate.

 It conveys maturity, respect for your followers,


compassion, correct sense of humor, and love of
humanity.
 Followers long to listen to the Charismatic leader

 Result is having loyal followers with urge to excel.
