• refers to the body, a marvelous container and


complex, finely time machine which we interface
with our environment and fellow beings.(Sanjay
sigh)

• *BODY - initial source of sensation and necessary


for the origin and maintenance of personality.

• Standards of beauty and appearance - product of


diverse mix cultural and historical influences.
-well dressed, elegant, good looking, attractive.

• Female
-large breast, slender but well form biceps, a tiny
waist a round yet toned posterior.

• Male - muscular, wash board abs, powerful legs,


chiseled features.

• Body image-level of attractiveness


- somebody’s own impression of how
his/her looks.
- important aspect of identity.

Two types of beauty


• inner beauty - refers to the inner quality of a
person.
• external beauty - focuses on external features of a
body, commonly defined as a combination of
qualities.

• all cultures everywhere have attempted to


change their body in an attempt to meet their
cultural standards of beauty.as well as their
religious and/or social obligations.

• Body adornment - refers to the practice of


physical enhancing the body by styling and
decorating the hair, painting and embellishing the
fingernails, wearing makeup, painting the body,
wearing jewelry and the use of clothing.

• Body modification - refers to the physical


alteration of the through the use of surgery,
tattooing, piercing, scarification, branding ,
genital mutilation, implants and other practice.

• Pop culture - is culture widely accepted and


patronized by the public as in pop music.

• Self definition - the way a person sees himself.


The influence of media on the adolescent’s

• Media - plays a large role in how teenagers view


themselves by shaping images of what teenagers
are supposed to be or do.

Impact of social media on the self esteem of the


adolescent

• Exposure to social media may lead to putting


pressures to be thin constituting risk factors for
body dissatisfactions.
