FLYOVER
INTRODUCTION
 A Flyover is a bridge road ,railway , or similar structure
that crosses over another road or railway.
 It is a bridge that carries one road or railway line above
another either with or without subsidiary roads, for
communication between the two sides.
 A Flyover is a structure which connects two points
which are already accessible and is really flying over or
across manmade structures such that road, railway ,
building , street.
 It consist of deck slab longitudinal girders , cross
girders, deck beam pier and foundation.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FLYOVER AND
BRIDGE
BRIDGE

 The drainage structure which facilitates a communication

route for carrying a road or railway traffic across an
obstruction or depression with or without water is called a
bridge.
 2. Bridge is a structure that is built over natural obstructions
such as rivers, valleys to connect two locations separated by
these obstructions.
 3. Bridges are further classified on the basis of their purpose,
Lifespan, materials, span, etc.
 Bridges are used for navigating traffic across the obstruction,
to navigate pipelines, and other forms of transport.
FLYOVER

 Flyover is an overpass, a high-level road bridge that

crosses over a highway interchange or intersection.
 They are usually made over road junctions, roads,
streets, etc.

 The name itself suggests that you are flying over a

traffic zone.

 They are usually built for road vehicles.

TYPES OF FLYOVER
COMPONENT OF FLYOVER
PILE
 As we know PILE is a column (of reinforced
concrete) which transfers the load of
superstructure directly to the soil strata.
PILE - CAP
 A thick concrete mat that rests on piles
collectively to provide a suitable stable foundation
is Pile Cap. It is 1.8m thick and 5.2m wide
PIER
 A vertical supporting structure over pile
cap is Pier Shaft.
 The thickness is provided according to
drawings
BENT BEAM
 Abutment are typically used where
column lengths on multi-column piers
will require larger column sizes due to
slenderness.
 Abutment are also an option where
stream flow could result in debris build-
up between columns of a multicolumn.
CONCRETE PAD
 It is an independent support of bearing over pier /
abutment cap
BEARING PAD
 Bearing pads are used widely in
precast concrete parking garages.
 They function as buffers between the
separate concrete members to prevent
damage and facilitate movement (much
like cartilage between bones at joints).
GIRDER
 It is a support beam used in
construction.
 It is the main horizontal support of a
structure which supports smaller beams.
 Girders often have an I-beam cross
section composed of two load-bearing
flanges separated by a stabilizing web,
but may also have a box shape, Z
shape, or other forms.
DECK SLAB
 A slab deck is one where the deck is
analyzed as a plate.
 A beam and slab deck is one where the
beams may deflect somewhat
independently, and any transverse
forces are carried in the deck.
ROAD PAVEMENT
 It is one type of hard surface made
from durable surface material laid
down on an area that is intended to
carry vehicular or foot traffic.
 Its main function is to distribute the
applied vehicle loads to the sub-grade
through different layers.
MERITS AND DEMERITS
MERITS
 Flyovers play a major role in streamlining the
traffic control system.
 Through flyovers plenty of time is saved
avoiding congestion.
 Pollution effect is reduced.
 Flyovers reduce the risk of accidents.
 Flyovers also contribute a lot to the aesthetics
of the city. The persons traveling on the flyover
can enjoy the panoramic view of the city.
DEMERITS
 Flyovers are not as a rule suitable for built up
areas as they require a large area and also it is
costly.
 Lack of proper management in the flyover
construction may cause many problems.
 Loss in the case of accidents is increased. The
risk of accidents is reduced but in case an
accident occurs the loss may be more.
 So, it's ironical that the flyover has become a
liability here instead of an assed for the city.
