Equipment design:

Clarifier design for

turbid water
Introduction
Clarifiers (also referred to as sedimentation tanks or settlers ) are
integral part of any water and wastewater treatment plant. At
these treatment facilities, solids are removed from the
water/waste water by using gravity sedimentation in quiescent
conditions. All clarifiers have to functional zones-a clarification
zone where the process of gravity sedimentation occurs, and a
settling zone, where the settled solids are accumulated forming a
dense later of slug (sludge blanket),
Main objective of our equipment
●To separate the total
suspended solids in turbid
water and acquire clarified
water.
Considerations during
the process
Materials of Construction
Since the raw material that will be used is raw water from a
river, the type of material that will be utilized is stainless
steel 304, to avoid corrosion of the material.
Type of clarifier
According to their function, clarifiers are categorized as primary
and secondary.

Primary clarifiers are located downstream of the water treamtent

just plant headworks. Their main prupose is to remove the
settleable suspended solids in the plant infleunt. Customarily,
primary clarifiers are equipped with devices for removal of
floatable compounds (i.e scum, oil and grease) in the the
wastewater influent as they accumulate on the surface of the
tanks during the sedimentation process.
Type of clarifier
Secondary tanks are located downstream of the biological
(secondary) treament facilities of thw wastewater treatment plant
(such as activated sludge aeration basins or trickling filters) and are
used to separate the biomass generated during the secondary
treatment process from the treated plant effluent.

Primary and secondary clarifiers are classified into two main

categories according to geometric shape: rectangular and circular.
The most suitable shape for a given application depends on several
factors should be selected based on cost-benefit analysis.
Type of clarifier
As for the project prototype in discussion, the group have
compromised to construct a primary, circular clarifier. As based on
research these are advantages and disadvantages have been
summed up.

Utilization of coagulants
Coagulation and flocculation are essential components of both
water and wastewater treatment. They provide a reliable process
for treating water turbidity (the cloudiness or haziness of a fluid
typically invisible to the naked eye), which is a key test of water
quality. In wastewater treatment, they enable up to 90% reduction
in suspended solids and organic loads.
