What are
nanoemulsions?
 Nanoemulsions are defined as clear or translucent
emulsions containing droplets of size typically
smaller than approximately 200 nm (0.2 µm).
 They are typically oil-in-water (O/W) or water-
in-oil (W/O) colloidal dispersions.
 A nanoemulsion is a kinetically stable but a
thermodynamically unstable system, in which
Ostwald ripening is considered the main factor of
its instability.

the brain.
What are the properties of
nanoemulsions? (2)
 It can be formulated in a variety of formulations such
as foams, creams, liquids, and sprays.
 The surface properties of emulsions can be modified
by control of the charged nature of the interfacial film
or by the incorporation of homing devices into the film
to target specific tissues and organs after injection.
 Negatively charged droplets are cleared more rapidly
from the blood than neutral or positively charged ones.
 Helpful in taste masking.
What are the processes of nanoemulsions and the pros
and cons of them?
What are the applications of nanoemulsions?
Why are nanoemulsions a promising
system for cosmetic use?
1. Ease of manufacturing.
Due to
2. Controllable particle sizes.
3. High – kinetic stability.
4. Relatively low surfactant levels.
5. The versatility in formulation allows a wide
range of delivery formulations to be
developed.

Applications of nanoemulsions in cosmetics (1)

NeoGouttes Target ™
technology is used by Capsum
company to produce highly
concentrated serum, a multi-
corrective face cream, and an
eye contour cream that has
fabulous efficacy and
effectiveness.

Nanoemulsion based on ethylene oxide
and propylene oxide block copolymers

A nanoemulsion comprising an oily phase dispersed in an

aqueous phase and having oil globules with a number average
size of less than 100 mm, which dispersion is facilitated by a
Surfactant comprised of polyethylene oxide and polypropylene
oxide blocks, the oily phase comprising at least one oil having a
molecular weight of greater than 400 and wherein the ratio by
weight of the amount of oily phase to the amount of Surfactant
ranges from 2 to 10.

Lifeline uses the world’s only proteins and

peptides from human (non-fertilized) pluripotent
stem cells, along with powerful concentrations of
cutting edge ingredients that are incorporated in
nanospheres (nanoemulsions).
Future of nanoemulsions (1)

1- W/O nanoemulsion formulations are under investigation in cancer chemotherapy

for prolongation of drug release after intramuscular or intratumoral injection, and as a
means of enhancing the transport of anticancer agents via the lymphatic system.
Future of nanoemulsions (2)

2- cationic emulsions complexed with plasmid 3- Positively charged (cationic) nanoemulsions have
DNA show promise in gene delivery. also been shown to increase skin permeation of
poorly soluble antifungal drugs and ceramides due
to their interaction with the negatively charged skin
epithelial cells.
