CONDITIONALS

If it rains ,I will take an umbrella.

1. A Condition or If Clause

2. A Result or Main Clause


Express the idea that action in ‘main clause’ can only happen
when a certain condition in ‘if clause’ is fulfilled.
BASIC STRUCTURE

 TWO POSSIBLE BASIC STRUCTURES


1. If clause , main clause
If the shop opens , I will buy a pen.

2. Main clause + if clause


I will buy a pen if the shop opens.
TYPES OF CONDITIONAL SENTENCES
1. FIRST CONDITIONAL (OPEN CONDITION)
2. SECOND CONDITIONAL (WISHFUL CONDITION)
3. THIRD CONDITIONAL (UNFULFILLED CONDITION)
FIRST CONDITIONAL

 First conditional describes a situation that is possible in present


or future.
For example
If I am late, I will call you.
 Structure
If +subject + present indefinite , subject +will/may/can + base
form of verb
 Will shows strong probability
If you study hard , you will pass.
 Can is used for permission and for ability
If you work harder , you can get good marks.(ability)
You can play cricket if you complete your homework in time.
(permission)
 May is used for permission but in formal cases
If you complete your test before time, you may leave the
classroom.
SECOND CONDITIONAL

If I had a lot of money, I would buy an expensive car.


If I were rich , I would buy an expensive car.
 This conditional describes an imaginary, impossible or
unlikely situation in present or future.
 Structure
If + subject + past indefinite , subject +would/could/might+
base form of verb
 Would is used for certainty
If you trained him, he would win the race.

 Could is used for ability/possibility


If he were taller, he could play basketball professionally.
If you trained him, he could win the race.

 Might is used for weak possibility


If he ran faster, he might catch the bus.
THIRD CONDITIONAL
If I had won the lottery, I would have bought a house.
I would have invited her to the party if I had seen her.

 3rd conditional is used to refer to situations in the past which did not
happen because a certain situation was not fulfilled.

 STRUCTURE
if + subject + past perfect , subject + would have/could have/might have
+ 3rd form of verb
 Would is used for certainty, could for ability, and might for
uncertainty

If he had gone to university, he would have become a doctor.

If he had gone to university, he could have become a doctor.

If he had gone to university, he might have become a doctor.
