3 Dc Motors

# A DC motor is defined as a class of electrical motors that convert direct current electrical
energy into mechanical energy.

# In a DC motor, the input electrical energy is the direct current which is transformed into
the mechanical rotation. In this session, let us know what is a DC motor

# Dc motors also known as direct current motors

* Principle of Dc motors:
When kept in a magnetic field ,current –carrying
conductor gains torque and develops a tendency to move

* Types of Dc motors:
1) Series
2) Shunt
3) Compound
1) Series Dc motors:

1) A series DC motor connects the armature and

field windings in series with a common D.C. power
source.

2) Series DC motors are generally used where

high starting torque is required, and speed
variations are possible. These types
2) Shunt Dc motors:

1) a DC shunt motor, the armature and field

(shunt) windings are connected in parallel. A
parallel circuit is also known as a shunt circuit

Where:
Itotal = supply current
Ia = current though armature windings
Ish = current through shunt (field) windings
2) A DC shunt motor is used in applications where a constant
speed and high torque is required, such as a paper manufacturing
unit, Lathe Machines, Centrifugal Pumps, Fans, Lifts
3) compound dc motor :
1) compound DC motors are basically made up
of a combination of series and shunt motors.
they are also called DC compound motors

2) Compound DC motors offer both high starting

torque and good speed control, making
compound DC motors suitable for a variety of
applications such as:
1)business machines.
2) machine tools
Dc motors vs Dc generator :
Dc motors  construction :
1) A DC motor or machine consists of two windings namely field winding
and armature winding.
2) The field winding is stationary, and the armature winding can rotate .
3) The field winding produces a magnetic flux in the air gap between the
armature and field windings and the armature is placed in this magnetic
field.
 4) Yoke: The external structure of the DC generator is
known as Yoke. It is made of either cast iron or steel
What is pole shoe in DC motor?
5) Pole Core and Pole Shoes: The pole core and pole shoes
are fixed to the magnetic frame or yoke by bolts. They serve
the following purposes: (i) They support the field or exciting
coil
Application of Dc motors :
1) Elevators
2) Crane
3) Steel mills
4) Rolling mills
