PARTICIPLE
Participle is supposed to have the functions of both Verb and Adjective
Present Participle
Looking at the beautiful sky, I remembered about my hometown.
(When I looked at the beautiful sky, , I remembered about my hometown)

Past Participle
Washed by my brother, the car looked shiny.
(The car was washed by my brother, the car looked shiny)
Present Participle
A Present Participle is formed with ‘ing’ form of the verb to indicate an
action going on, incomplete or imperfect.

• Hearing the noise, we rushed out of the restaurant.


(When we heard the noise, we rushed out of the restaurant)

• Thinking all is well, he went to bed


(He thought that all was well so he went to bed)
Past Participle
A Past Participle (VERB 3) is used to indicate a passive action and a
complete action.

• Forced by her mother, Eli became a doctor.


(Eli became a doctor because she was forced by her mother)

• Made by granny, the tea was so calming.


(The tea was made by granny, the tea was so calming)

Since the participle is a verb-adjective, it must be attached to some
noun or pronoun. In other words, it must always have a proper subject
of reference.

• Being a very hot day, I remained in my house. (Incorrect)


• It being a very hot day, I remained in my house. (Correct)

A present participle should not be used to express an action which is not
simultaneous with the action of the principal verb

• He flew to Washington on Sunday, arriving there on Monday (Incorrect)


• He flew to Washington on Sunday and arrived there on Monday. (Correct)

There must be a strong subject while using participle.

• Returning home, the moon went behind the clouds.(Incorrect)


• While he was returning home, the moon went behind the clouds. (correct)
