Contemporary Bamboo Architecture
ABOUT:-
• They focus on organic design integrating natural materials with 21st century
engineering knowledge.

• The organic architecture with free-flowing designs integrating buildings into

their environment and into the nature of the place. This means observing
nature’s designs, like the curves of leaves, mountain ridges, river flows or
whatever else is an attractive line at a given place.
Contemporary Bamboo Architecture
• Bamboo and clay/earth are our materials of choice to achieve our objective
to create such connecting bioclimatic spaces for homes, community, school
or leisure use, fitting compassionately into their natural surroundings

• Modern bamboo & earth architecture is their design contribution to the

area of sustainable architecture and human lifestyle using bamboo,
rammed earth and adobe bricks in different scenarios,  from structural, to
insulation, room separation.

• Based in Thailand CLA (Chiangmai Life Architects) designs and

CLC (Chiangmai Life Construction) is specializing on big bamboo
structures such as big bamboo trusses for halls, eco-resorts, villas,
houses, schools as well as office and factory spaces.

PROJECTS

Contemporary Bamboo Architecture
1.SCIENCE LABS AND MUSIC ENTRE@ PANYADEN SCHOOL
• CLA used natural materials such as bamboo, rammed
earth and adobe bricks in organic design forms that
integrate the buildings into their natural environment
based on modern structural and safety calculations
whilst achieving a minimal carbon footprint.

• The Science labs consist of 3 lab rooms, chemistry,

physics and biology, furnished with state-of-the-art
equipment such as fume hoods, fresh air systems,
emergency showers, etc.
Contemporary Bamboo Architecture
• The building is shaped like an L, which because of the
way the bamboo roof was designed looks like a heart
from above.
•  The middle compartment acts as the supply, storage
and central distribution room for gas and all lab
materials

•  The building captures the user’s imagination by the

unusual contrast but at the same time unexpected
smooth marriage between the exposed bamboo
structure and earthen walls with the cutting-edge
technology on display in the lab space.
Contemporary Bamboo Architecture
• The roof design brings the 2 buildings together
resembling 2 hands or wings in a protective gesture
for the structure underneath. Inside the rooms the
visible bamboo roof with its arches and flowing
curves inspires the students to get in touch with the
natural flow of music pouring from their hearts.

2.BAMBOO DOME LIVING ROOM
• In the picturesque settings of the rice fields in northern
Thailand, CLA (Chiangmai Life Architects) designed a
bamboo dome to give form to the owners’ plan of
building a round house.

• The design is based on 6 prefabricated bamboo arches

that were lifted into place by a crane
Contemporary Bamboo Architecture
•  These arches “grow” out of the floor and create a
cupola and separate spaces inside the adobe brick wall.
A big bamboo roof covers the structure, creating
additional living spaces with covered terraces on the
north and east side

•  The advantage of Bamboo is that it is not only a great

structural material if used correctly but also is
beautiful to look at in its finished version
