Pagbabalik-loob at
Pagtalikod sa kasalanan
Whenever we
read the

Gospel
We encounter
JESUS
Because He is the Word
of God who became flesh
Let us pray!
(Sign of the cross)
“God our Father, we thank You for blessing
us with another day to gather as one
community of Faith. As we reflect on Your
Word, help us to become heralds of Your
Good News who is Jesus Christ. Grant we
pray that through the working of the Holy
Spirit, we may be like the Blessed Virgin
Mary who was conceived without sin who,
upon hearing the Word of God through the
Angel Gabriel, became the bearer of the
Word made Flesh; and John the Baptist who
dauntlessly proclaimed the coming of Jesus
and prepared the way of the Lord. May we
become faithful to our Christian vocation to
proclaim Jesus both in words and in our
lives. All these we ask in the name of Jesus
Christ Your Son our Lord, who lives and
reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God
forever and ever. Amen.
The Gospel will be read twice.
After reading it for the first time the students
may share their striking words at the comment
section, during the silence.
After reading it for the second time silence will
follow for personal prayer and contemplation,
then sharing of reflection shall follow.

THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO

ST. MATTHEW
3:1-12
Glory to you,
O
Lord.
31
In those days John the Baptist

appeared, preaching in the desert

of Judea* [and] saying, “Repent,

2

for the kingdom of heaven is at

hand!” It was of him that the

3

prophet Isaiah had spoken when

he said:
“A voice of one crying out in the

desert, ‘Prepare the way of the

Lord, make straight his paths.’” 4

John wore clothing made of

camel’s hair and had a leather belt

around his waist. His food was

locusts and wild honey.

At that time Jerusalem, all Judea,

and the whole region around the

Jordan were going out to him and

6

were being baptized by him in the

Jordan River as they

acknowledged their sins.

When he saw many of the
Pharisees and Sadducees
coming to his baptism, he
said to them, “You brood
of vipers! Who warned
you to flee from the
coming wrath? Produce
8

good fruit as evidence of

your repentance.
9 And do not presume to
say to yourselves, ‘We
have Abraham as our
father.’ For I tell you, God
can raise up children to
Abraham from these
stones. Even now
10

the ax lies at the root of

the trees.
Therefore, every tree
that does not bear good
fruit will be cut down
and thrown into the fire.
I am baptizing you
11

with water, for

repentance, but the one
who is coming after me
is mightier than I.
I am not worthy to carry his
sandals. He will baptize you
with the holy Spirit and fire.
12His winnowing fan is in
his hand. He will clear his
threshing floor and gather
his wheat into his barn, but
the chaff he will burn with
unquenchable fire.”
BE SILENT.
LISTEN.

bosconians with their bible (use pencil or highlighter)
Noong panahong iyon, si Juan
Bautista’y dumating sa ilang ng
Judea at nagsimulang mangaral.
Sinabi niya, “Pagsisihan ninyo’t
talikdan ang inyong mga
kasalanan, sapagkat malapit nang
maghari ang Diyos!”
Si Juan ang tinutukoy ni
Propeta Isaias nang sabihin
nito, “Ito ang sabi ng isang
sumisigaw sa ilang: ‘Ihanda
ninyo ang daraanan ng
Panginoon, tuwirin ninyo ang
kanyang mga landas!”
Hinabing balahibo ng kamelyo
ang damit ni Juan, at balat ang
kanyang pamigkis. Ang kanya
namang pagkai’y balang at pulot-
pukyutan. At pumunta sa kanya
ang mga taga-Jerusalem, taga-
Judea,
at mga naninirahan sa
magkabilang panig ng Jordan.
Ipinahayag nila ang kanilang mga
kasalanan, at sila’y bininyagan ni
Juan sa Ilog Jordan. Ngunit nang
makita niyang marami sa mga
Pariseo at mga Saduseo ang
lumalapit upang pabinyag, sinabi
niya sa kanila,
“Kayong lahi ng mga ulupong!
Sino ang nagbabala sa inyo
upang tumakas sa parusang
darating? Ipakilala ninyo sa
pamamagitan ng inyong
pamumuhay na kayo’y nagsisisi.
At huwag ninyong ipangahas na
kayo’y anak ni Abraham.
Sinasabi ko sa inyo: Ang Diyos
ay makalilikha ng mga tunay na
anak ni Abraham mula sa mga
batong ito. Ngayon pa’y
nakaamba na ang palakol sa ugat
ng punungkahoy; ang bawat
punungkahoy na hindi mabuti
ang bunga ay puputulin at
ihahagis sa apoy.
Binibinyagan ko kayo sa tubig
bilang tanda ng pagsisisi ninyo’t
pagtalikod sa inyong mga
kasalanan; ngunit ang
dumarating na kasunod ko ang
magbibinyag sa inyo sa Espiritu
Santo at sa apoy. Siya’y
makapangyarihan kaysa akin,
hindi ako karapat-dapat kahit
tagadala ng kanyang panyapak.
Hawak niya ang kanyang
kalaykay upang alisin ang
dayami. Titipunin niya sa
kamalig ang trigo, ngunit ang
ipa’y susunugin sa apoy na di
mamamatay kailanman.”
The Word
of the Lord,
Praise to you,
Lord Jesus Christ.

Catechism (background)
John the Baptist
(mission and identity of John the Baptist.)

He was preaching in the desert of Judea (v.1)

repentance in view of the kingdom of God (v.2). He
is referred to the prophecy of Isaiah: “a voice crying
out in the desert, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make
straight his paths’ (v. 3). John’s mission was to
announce to the people the need for conversion or a
change of mind and heart that would lead them to
conform to the will of God.
Catechism (background)
John the Baptist and the Pharisees
and Sadducees
Pharisees and Sadducees came to John to be
baptized. John challenged the Jewish leaders to
show their repentance by producing good fruits and
not to claim their entitlement for having Abraham as
their father. He warned them that the time for
repentance was short. Like trees that did not bear
fruits were cut down, so too they would be cut
down and thrown into the fire (v. 10).
Catechism (background)
John the Baptist and the Messiah
(John’s humility)
John’s mission was also to prepare for the coming
of the Messiah. He fulfilled this mission not only
by announcing it to the people but by the
extreme humility he showed in relation to the
Messiah who was to come. “The one who is
coming after me is mightier than I” and “I am not
worthy to carry his sandals” (v. 11).
Catechism (background)
John the Baptist and the Messiah
(John’s humility)
His baptism was only a foreshadowing of the
baptism that would happen when the Messiah
would come for “He will baptized with the Holy
Spirit and fire” (v. 11). This suggests that the
baptism of John (baptism of water) is a
prefiguration of the baptism to be instituted by
Jesus. That of Jesus is divine as it is done with the
power of the Holy Spirit.
1. Prepare the ways of the Lord, make
straight his path.

2. Repent for the kingdom of heaven is

at hand!

3. Ang bawat punungkahoy na hindi

mabuti ang bunga ay puputulin at
ihahagis sa apoy.
3 Learning from the Gospel
- John is great because he
was a prophet
of God; he was God’s voice, and he
proclaimed a message forcefully a message
about repentance.

- John is great because he is the Precursor

of the Messiah. He announced to the
people the coming of the long-awaited
Savior of the Jews and of the world.
3 Learning from the Gospel
In the light of the
preaching of John the Baptist,
proclaiming Jesus to the world today
takes a lot of courage and
energy to those who wish to do it.
3 Learning from the Gospel
In today’s Gospel narrative
John the Baptist is
presented
as the figure who bridges
the time before Christ
and prepares the way for Christ’s own
ministry(mission).

Words to Ponder:
The Gospel narrative invites us to
prepare the way of the
Lord by having a personal
conversion (change of heart)
recognizing our faulty way of
living and making amends unto
it.
CLOSING PRAYER
O God, who sent your Only Begotten
Son into this world free the human race
from its ancient enslavement, bestow on
those who devoutly await him the grace
of your compassion from on high, that
we may attain the prize of true freedom.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your
Son, who lives and reigns with you in
the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for
ever and ever. Amen.
