Poetry Structure
How are poems organized? There are several structural elements of poetry that are particularly important to
consider when analyzing any poetic work. These include:

● Rhythm: The rhythm of a poem is the beat or pattern that the words and syllables in the poem have. Some
poems are iambic, meaning that the poem is made up of sets of unstressed-stressed syllable pairs.
● Meter: The meter of a poem denotes how the rhythm intersects with a poem's line length. For instance, if a
poem is written in iambic pentameter, then each line will have five sets of unstressed-stressed syllable
pairs.
● Rhyme scheme: A rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhyming words that make up the end of each line. Not all
poems rhyme, but those that do might follow an ABAB rhyme scheme, where lines 1 and 3 rhyme (the A
lines) and lines 2 and 4 also rhyme (the B lines).
● Form: The form of a poem includes its length and whether it is divided into sections or stanzas. A stanza is
a group of lines in a poem which is separated from other parts of the poem by space. A poem with stanzas
consisting of four lines would be said to be made up of quatrains .
TYPE OF POEM
Types of Poetry
Poetry has two general types, namely old poetry and modern poetry.

Old Poetry
Types of old poetry in the form of pantun, syair, talibun, mantra and gurindam. While the types of modern poetry in the form of
narrative poetry, lyric poetry and descriptive poetry.

Old poetry, namely mantras, is a type of poetry created in animism beliefs, usually recited in cultural rituals and using words that
can cause magical sound effects.

A poem is an old type of poetry that rhymes abab with each line consisting of four lines, two side lines and two main lines. While
talibun consists of sampiran and fill more than four lines and always even, for example two lines of sampiran and two lines of fill.

The poem has an array of four stanzas and rhymes with aaaa and the contents tell a story, and gurindam is an old type of poetry
consisting of two lines, with the same rhythm, the content of the first line is the cause while the second line contains the effect.
TYPE OF
POEM
Modern Poetry
Modern poetry is usually called free poetry, because it is not bound by rhyme, number of lines
and so on.

Types of modern poetry, namely narrative poetry is poetry used to convey a story, divided into
three, namely epic, romance and ballad. The second type of modern poetry is lyric poetry which
is used to express the poet's ideas, the last type of modern poetry is descriptive poetry, namely
poetry that expresses the opinion and impression of the poet.

In compiling various types of poetry, one must have creativity in oneself and a good way of
writing. Grameds can learn this in the book Skilled Writing: Tips & Tricks for Writing Reports,
Opinions, Short Stories, Poems, Pantun.
CHARACTERISTICS
OF POEMS :
1. Language generation

A poem is not just a string of meaningless words, organized into a sentence and a paragraph. The
language of poetry is a slightly more compacted language by the writer. It makes the words in poetry
seem lifeless to the reader.

2. Typical Selection Word

A poet is like someone who cooks spices in order to make a delicious dish. For a poet, the seasonings are
words. Hence, a poet should taste the words he foretold, adding meaning to the poem he wrote. The
factors considered in the selection of words for poetry are as follows: the meaning of chias, symbolism,
the similitude
CHARACTERISTICS
3. Concrete word
OF POEMS :
When writing poetry, there is a poet's desire to draw something more concrete or tangible. Therefore, words were chosen that made
everything impression untouchable. For a poet, it is felt more clearly.

4. imaginary

Poets also frequently create imaginary or imaging in their poetry. Imitation can be words or a set of words that amplify what a poet wants
to say because it appeals to the imagination of the reader.

5. Rhythm (rhythm)

In poetry we often encounter repeated sounds, words, phrases, and sentences. It's called rhythm or rhythm. Moreover, rhythm may refer to
the frequent shift of the high-pitched, or the short, rich.

6. Facial expressions

At this time, facial features or typography of poetry are increasingly varied. In fact, as a poet consider facial grammar the most important
poetic element. Hence, facial performance is very common.
Leonard Clark

Over the hill

First sight of the sea
Lying sunlit and still
Just waiting for me.

I race from the land

In the clear morning light
To rock pool and sand,
Shells whiter than white.

Birds ride the sky,

The wispy clouds there
Soft floating, and I
Am walking on air.
When I was threeteen
It was so much fun.
When I was fourteen
The world was new.

Then I turned quickly

Into a boy of fiveteen
One year more
And I was sixteen
Now I’m happy to say
I’m a year older today.

And soon you’ll see

Another birthday party for me
.
Vachel Lindsay
There was a little turtle.
He lived in a box.
He swam in a puddle.

He climbed on the rocks.

He snapped at a mosquito.
He snapped at a flea.
He snapped at a minnow.

And he snapped at me.

He caught the mosquito.
He caught the flea.
He caught the minnow.
And he didn’t catch me.
You are my angel
You take care
You love me

My mom
It's your hands that keep raising me
Your hands are always hugging me

My mom
Heaven is upon your foot
It doesn't count how tired you carry
I love you mom
Best friends are angels
That God sent along.
They always stay beside you
Whenever things go wrong.

Whenever I am lonely,
You're always by my side,
And when I call to you for help,
You never run or hide
