3 Rules for Ray Diagram for Lenses
Rule #1. An incident ray parallel to the principal axis will refract
through the focus.
Rule #2. An incident ray through the focus will refract parallel to the
axis
Rule #3. An incident ray through the center of the lens will go straight
through the lens.
Why do this rule
work for lenses?
Image formation by Thin Lens
Thin Lens
One whose thickness allows rays to refract but does not allow properties
such as dispersion and aberrations.
Rule Tracing for Thin Lenses
Ray Tracing
The technique of determining or following the path that light rays take.
• A ray entering a converging lens parallel to its axis passes through the focal po F of the lens
on the other side.
• A ray entering a diverging lens parallel to its axis seems to come from the focal point F.
• A ray passing trough the center of either a converging or a diverging lens does not change
direction
• A ray entering a converging lens through its focal point exits parallel to its axis.
• A ray that enters a diverging lens by heading toward the focal point on the opposite side exits
parallel to the axis.
