Brief Introduction
Measuring accurately is a skill that should be developed. Inaccurate
measurement is a waste of time, effort, and materials. The development of the
skill in measuring starts with the ability to read the measurement.
An orthographic or pictorial view of an object cannot be used as a working
guide in the construction of an object without complete and accurate
dimensions indicated in the drawing.
In the broadest sense, mensuration is all about the process of
measurement which include data regarding the width, depth and volume of an
object. While the measurement results obtained using mensuration are
estimates rather than actual physical measurements, the calculations are
usually considered very accurate. Mensuration is often based on making use of
a model that serves as the standard for making the calculations. 11

Remember!
There are two systems of measurement: the English system
which originated in England and the Metric system or Systems
International (SI) which originated in France.
English System provides a creative way on how people can measure
by themselves. For example, people measure a shorter distance on
the ground with their feet. They measure shorter distance by their
palm which is equal to an inch, yard, miles.
Metric System is a decimal system of measurement. It exists in
several variations with different choices of base units. Metric Units are
widely used around the world for personal, commercial, and scientific
purposes.
The basic SI unit is called the meter. The meter is divided into
100 centimeters. Each centimeter is divided into 10 millimeters. They

In the English system, the inch is divided into 16 graduations and the
smallest graduation is read as one-sixteenth (1/16).

To read measurement exceeding 1 inch say 1” and additional smaller graduations, it is read
and written as: 1” 4/16 or 1 ¼ (one and one-fourth inch).

1 foot + 2 inches + 3 smaller graduations, it is written as 14” 3/16.

In the Systems International measurement, 1 centimeter is divided into 10 millimeters.
