Types of POETRY

POETRY
“poiein” – Greek word, “to make”
- Usually associated with artificial or highly refined
language.
- It makes use of meter, rhyme, and various devices
involving the sound words.
Narrative Poetry
- Tells a story.
- Contains elements of fiction
Epic
- A long poem written in a noble,
dignified style and tells of heroic
exploits performed by great heroes.
Dramatic Poetry
- Also tells a story
- It is spoken and acted out on the
stage.
- Stage Play
Lyric Poetry
- Originally intended to be sung to the
accompaniment of a lyre.
- comes from the Greek word “lyre” which
is a kind of stringed harp on which the
poets and singers of the classic age
accompanied themselves when they sang.
Lyric Poetry
 Song – intended to be sung
 Ode – addresses in an exalted manner to an
object or person
 Ballad – a simple tale in simple verse,
generally folk songs handed down by oral
tradition
 Elegy – has death and mourning for its
theme
 Sonnet – a poem of 14 iambic pentameter
lines
Ghazal
 It is a Middle Eastern form
arranged in a series of couplets
usually five or more.
Qasida
 It is a laudatory, elegiac, or satiric
poem that is found in Arabic,
Persian, and many related Asian
literature.
Sijo
 It is a Korean poetic form that
consists of 3 lines, each
approximately 14 to 16 syllables
long.
Rubai
 It is a Middle Eastern poetic form
which contains an unlimited number
of four-line stanzas or quatrains.
Tanka (short song)
 It is a classic lyric form of Japanese
poetry, related to the haiku with 5
unrhymed lines of 57577 syllables.
Ci
 It is a kind of lyric Classical Chinese
poetry using a poetic meter based
upon some 800 fixed-rhythm
forms, originally tunes of songs,
each having a traditional title.
Pantoum
 It is a Malay poetic form composed
entirely of quatrains. There is no
restriction on the number of
quatrains, but each quatrain must
follow the rhyme scheme ABAB
within itself.
Renga
 It is a Japanese poetic form written
by 2 or more people, one stanza at
a time.
Haiku
 It is a Japanese poetic form written
by pictures with imagery that
connect the world of humans and
nature.
Tanaga
 It is a precolonial Filipino short
poem that traditionally contains
philosophical ideas and views about
the world, events, people, and other
subjects.
