SIMPLE PAST

simple past also called simple past or past tense, is the past tense in
English. It serves to express past actions, both close in time and distant.
The duration of the action itself is not relevant, but rather whether the
action has been completed or not. It is formed with the regular or
irregular past tense of the main verb and the auxiliary verb do. It is
equivalent in Spanish to the preterite indefinite and the preterite
imperfect.
• The past simple is used in English to express:
• past actions;
Example:
Last month a girl from China joined our class.
• She showed us where she was from on a map.
a succession of actions in the past;
Example:She came in, introduced herself, and began to talk about her
country.
• interruption of a course of action;
Example:While she was talking about her home town, the school bell
suddenly rang.

• conditional sentences built with if, for which the imperfect

subjunctive is used in Spanish.
Example:If I spoke Chinese, I would like to go on holiday to China.
