BADMINTON
BADMINTON
■ Badminton is a racket sport played by either two opposing
players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles), who
take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court
divided by a net. Players score points by striking a
shuttlecock or birdie with their racket so that it passes
over the net and land in their opponents half of the court.

Badminton has been an Olympic Sport with
five (5) events:

HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT
The beginning of Badminton can be traced to Mid-18th Century British India,
where it was created by British Military officers stationed there. Early
photographs show Englishmen adding a net to a traditional English game of
battledore and shuttlecock.
The sport is related to ball badminton which is originated in TAMIL NADU,
and is similar to Hanetsuki which Originated in Japan. Being particularly
popular in the British garrison town Poona, (Now Pune) the game also came
to be known as “POONA”.
Initially, balls of wool referred as ball of badminton were preferred by the
upper class in windy or wet conditions but ultimately the shuttlecock stock.
This game was taken by retired officers back to England where it developed
and rules were set out.
1860
ISAAC SPRATT, a London toy dealer, publishes a booklet,
Badminton Battledore- a new game, but unfortunately no
copy has survived.

1893
The Badminton Association of England published the first set of
rules according to these regulations, similar to today’s rules, and
officially launched badminton in the house called “DUNBAR” at
Waverly Grove, Portsmouth, England.
1899
Started the All England Open Championships, the first
badminton competition in the world.

1934
The International Badminton Federation (IBF) now known
as Badminton World Federation was established.

is the international governing body for the sport
of badminton.

The court is rectangular and divided into halves by a net.


Courts are usually marked for both singles and doubles
play, although badminton rules permit a court to be
marked for singles only. The doubles court is wider than
the singles court, but both are of the same length. The
exception which often confusion to newer players is that
the doubles court has a shorter serve- length dimensions.

The Net Line
The net line marks the middle
of the court where the net is
placed, creating a 22 feet by
20 feet area on each side of
the net.

The Badminton Net


The top of the badminton net is
hung 5 feet above in the center
net line.
Short Service Line
The short service line is
marked 6 feet 6 inches from
the center line. The area inside
the short service line is also
called the Non Volley Zone.

Center Line
The Center Line is the line that
divides the court from the
Short Service Line to the Back
Boundary Line. This delineates
the Left from Right Service
Court.
Side Line for Singles Play
The Singles Side Line is marked 1 1/2
feet from the edge of the outer
boundary (doubles side line)

Back Boundary Line and Long


Service Line for Singles
The back boundary line is the same
for singles and doubles play it is the
outermost back line on the court.

Long Service Line for Doubles


The Long Service line for Doubles is
marked 2 1/2 feet inside the Back
Boundary Line.
NET
The standard badminton net height is 152.4cm
(5ft) when measured from the ground level at the
center of the badminton court.

POST
The height of the badminton net posts which are
fixed at the extreme ends on the outside of the
badminton court should be 1.55m vertical length.
THE RACKET
Racket manufacturers have devised a
standard: a racket of 26 inches in length
and weighing 4.5 to 5.5 ounces.

SHUTTLECOCK
It has a small ball at the front to give it speed
and feathers protruding from it to help it float
when it is hit high into the air. An official
shuttlecock must have 14-16 feathers and are
usually made from a goose or duck.
