    The UAE was formed in 1971 when six of the seven emirates - Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah - agreed to unite under a federal system. The seventh emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, joined the union later in 1972. The UAE Supreme Council is made up of the rulers of the seven emirates and is the highest federal authority in the country. The Supreme Council appoints a President and Vice President who serve five-year terms as the heads of state.

    Desalination plants provide about 42% of the potable water in the UAE.
