Free Fall Motion
What is Free Fall
Motion?
It is a uniformly
accelerated motion in the
vertical dimension. A free-
falling object is an object
that is falling under the
sole influence of gravity.

Motion?
What is Free Fall
Case 1, ifMotion?
an object is simply dropped
from a certain height, then the initial
velocity of the object is 0 m/s.
What is Free Fall
Motion?

Given: ag = -9.8 Equation: vfy= viy +agt

m/s2 vfy2 = viy2 +2agdy
viy = 0 m/s Solution: vfy= 0 m/s+
t = 7.5 s (-9.8m/s2)
Required: vf =?
What is Free Fall
Motion?

Given: ag = -9.8Equation: vfy= viy +agt

m/s2 vfy2 = viy2 +2agdy
viy = 0 m/s Solution: d y = vfy2 /2ag
=(-73.5m/s)2/2(- 9.8 m/s 2)
t = 7.5 s
Required: vf =?
What is Free Fall
Case 2, if an object is thrown upward in a
Motion?
perfectly vertical direction, then it will slow
down as it rises upward. The moment at which
it reaches the peak of its trajectory, its velocity
is 0 m/s.
What is Free Fall
Given: a = -9.8
m/s2
Motion?
g

vfy = 0 m/s
dy = 0.25 m
Required: viy=? Equation: vfy2 = viy2 +2agdy
vtopy=? Solution: vtop y = 0 m/s
viy = / 2agdy
= / 2(-9.8 m/s)2(0.25m)
Activity 5: Free
Fall Problem 1. You are bored so you decide to execute a
simple physics experiment. A friend drops an object from
above a 1.5m-tall window in your house. Through video
analysis, you find that the object travels from the top of
the window to the bottom of the window in 0.14
seconds. How high above the top of the window was the
object dropped?

Problem 2. A physics student dropped a rock from a cliff

that strikes the bottom in 9.5 s. Calculate: (a) the speed
with which it strikes the water and (b) the height of the
bridge.
