Acts 5:1-11

A man named Ananias, however, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property.
2He retained for himself, with his wife’s knowledge, some of the purchase price,
took the remainder, and put it at the feet of the apostles.
3But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart so that you lied to the
holy Spirit and retained part of the price of the land?a
4While it remained unsold, did it not remain yours? And when it was sold, was it
not still under your control? Why did you contrive this deed? You have lied not
to human beings, but to God.”
5When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last, and great
fear came upon all who heard of it.

6The young men came and wrapped him up, then carried him out and
buried him.
7After an interval of about three hours, his wife came in, unaware of
what had happened.

8Peter said to her, “Tell me, did you sell the land for this amount?” She
answered, “Yes, for that amount.”
9Then Peter said to her, “Why did you agree to test the Spirit of the
Lord? Listen, the footsteps of those who have buried your husband are at
the door, and they will carry you out.”
10At once, she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the
young men entered they found her dead, so they carried her out and
buried her beside her husband.

may be done through words or actions.

1) “White lies” of boasting (pasiklab): It is

exaggerating one’s qualities in order to
gain affirmation and recognition from the
others.

2. Escapist lies (palusot), or for saving

face: It is preserving one’s supposed
good image before others, or avoiding
possible recriminations.

3. Careless lies (sabi-sabi), or simple flattery

(bola): This is but simple and may be
regarded as “no big deal” but the damage it
may cause to the person who does and who
lied to, may not be that easy to correct.

Other serious lies are?

1) Lies told from malice: This is a lie intended to


harm others.

2) Lies of propaganda or for profit: This is a lie
that is common to the government officials
which is evident during the election, also to
commercial advertisements which deceive the
consumer about the true nature of the product
in order to gain profit.

3) Lies of hypocrisy or half-


truths: On this case, truth is

twisted to say and mean
something which is not so.

4) Contrived flattery of others:


This becomes lying when it is

exaggeratedly used to gain or
win undue favor from the
authorities.

5) Silence (pa-simple): This is


commonly understood as “playing

safe”. It is a lie when one remains
silent though obliged to speak in
order to free himself/herself from
further trouble

person of faults of which he/she
is not guilty of.

4. Tale-bearing: It is a speech

secretly made, with the purpose of
breaking up a good relationship.

5. Derision: It is a jest or prank that

his presence, with the purpose of
putting him to confusion.
