Nutrition in Humans:

Lesson 2
Role of Enzymes in Digestion
BIG IDEA…

Concept: Relationships
1. All relationships are purposeful

2. Everything is related in some way; structure is

related to function.

3. Relationships may change over time.

Lesson 2:

What are enzymes?

What is the role of enzymes in

digestion?

Properties of enzymes
Recall: Biological Molecules

• Qn: How are biological molecules found in

macronutrients broken down into their
basic components?

• Ans: Hydrolysis occurs, in the presence

of an enzyme, to break the chemical
bonds within a larger molecule to form
smaller units.

Worksheet 2 Page 1

Digestion is the process where large

food molecules are hydrolysed/broken
down into smaller, soluble molecules that
can be absorbed into cells.

Recall: Why must molecules be small in

order to be transported into cells?
Worksheet 2 Page 2

How do enzymes help in the hydrolysis of

food molecules?
Analogy: Lock and key
What makes this possible?
Worksheet 2 Page 2

How do enzymes help in the hydrolysis of

food molecules?

Observe the simulation of enzyme action

and answer the questions in the worksheet.
Enzymes

Enzymes are biological catalysts

A catalyst is a substance that:

alters or speeds up a chemical reaction

without itself being chemically changed at the end of
the reaction
Recap: Properties of Enzymes

1. Enzymes are protein in nature

2. Enzymes speed up chemical reactions.
3. Enzymes are remain unchanged at the end of
a reaction, thus they are required in minute
amounts.
4. Enzymes are highly specific in action.
– Each chemical reaction inside a cell is
catalysed by one enzyme.
– An enzyme is specific due to its complex
three-dimensional shape (3-D
shape)
