Words you should
remember.
• Enzymes
• Catalyst
• Metabolism
What are enzymes?

• Enzymes are a biological catalyst; a substance

that speeds up a chemical reaction in living
organisms without itself being changed or
consumed.
• Enzymes speed up digestion.
• Enzymes are proteins that help speed
metabolism, or chemicals in our bodies
• metabolism, or chemicals in our bodies
What are catalysts

• A catalyst is a molecule which can facilitate(make

easier)a chemical reaction without being consumed
or changed
• It speeds up the reaction or lower temperature or
pressure or pressure needed to start a reaction
• Enzymes are biological catalysts or biocatalysts
What is metabolism

• Metabolism is the chemical reaction in the body

cells that change food into energy.
Questions in CB
page 28
1. Explain why digestion by
enzymes is chemical
reaction
since enzymes changes large
molecules into small ones
and breaks them down into a
new substance of small
molecules it is concidered a
chemical reaction.
Questions in
CB page 28
2. Do teeth cause a chemical
reaction to take place? Explain
your answer.
An enzyme called amylase found
in the saliva breaks down
starches into sugars
Questions in CB
page 29
3.Teeth help to break down
larger pieces of food into lots of
smaller pieces. Suggest how this
can help enzymes to digest the
food faster.
his increases the surface area
available for the enzyme,
amylase to work on
carbohydrates, so that the
chemical reaction (digestion) is
more efficient / faster and
breaking down into glucose/
more successful collisions
Questions in CB page 29

4.A protein molecule is made up of a long

chain of a smaller molecules called amino
acids. Draw a series of a diagrams showing
how an enzyme digests protein molecules.
Use the diagram at the bottom of the
previous page as a starting point.
