Who Was Queen Elizabeth II?

Princess Elizabeth was born on 21st


April 1926.

She was born in Mayfair, an area of


London.

She was the first child of The Duke


and Duchess of York. The Duke of
York later became King George VI.
Princess Elizabeth’s Childhood

Princess Elizabeth was taught at home,


not at school.

She learned art and


music and enjoyed
drama and swimming.

When she was 11, she joined the Girl Guides.

Princess Elizabeth married Philip
Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, on 20th
November 1947 in Westminster Abbey.

She was 21 years old when she


got married.

They received around 2500

Princess Elizabeth Becomes Queen
In 1952, when she was 25, Princess Elizabeth’s
father King George VI died.

Princess Elizabeth was in Kenya when she heard


the sad news. She came home straight away and
it was decided that she would become Queen.

She became Queen on 6th


February 1952 and was crowned
on 2nd June 1953.

Queen Elizabeth II In 1948, their first child Charles was born
and Philip, the Duke the Prince of Wales. When Queen
of Edinburgh had Elizabeth II died in 2022, he became
four children: King Charles III.

In 1950, Princess Anne was born –

In 1960, Prince Andrew was born – Duke


of York.

Queen Elizabeth II and Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh had several grandchildren,
including Prince William, Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge and Prince Harry,
Duke of Sussex.

Queen Elizabeth II had 12 great-grandchildren. You may have heard of Prince


George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis who are Prince William and
Catherine, Duke and Duchess of  Cornwall and Cambridge’s children.

The Role of Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II helped to look
after many countries around the world.

A picture of Queen Elizabeth II could


be seen on British money, such as
coins and notes, during her reign.

Queen Elizabeth II was also shown on


British stamps and sometimes, her
picture was used on stamps around the
world.

Her Majesty's official residence in London was Buckingham Palace.

She also spent lots of time at Windsor
Castle.

The Royal family often spent

Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilees
In 2002, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Golden
Jubilee – 50 years of being Queen of England.
There were lots of celebrations.

In 2012, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her


Diamond Jubilee. She had been Queen for 60
years! There were parties across the country, all
focused around a central weekend of events.

Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee was in 2022


and celebrated 70 years of her being
The Queen.

8th September 2022

On 8th September 2022, Buckingham Palace announced that Her Majesty Queen
Elizabeth II had died.

Prince Charles became King Charles III.


Fun Facts About Queen Elizabeth II
She had 9 thrones; 6 at Buckingham Palace!

She had her portrait painted over 130 times!

She sent cards to congratulate people who reached the age of 100.

Corgis were her favourite


dogs. She owned more than
30 corgis during
her reign.

She had been Queen longer


than any other
king or queen in the UK.
