BOILER FEED PUMP

Boiler feed pumps

• For boilers to produce steam, they first need
feedwater. Boiler feed pumps transport the
feedwater at high pressure from the
deaerator tank to the boiler. It’s a crucial
component of the whole boiler system.
• Rankine cycle process 1-2: Isentropic
compression in a pump. Here the working
fluid is pumped from low to high pressure.

• Balance leak off line
Balance leak off line
• Balance leak off line is used to balance the
centrifugal pump shaft from axial thrust.
During centrifugal pump operation, especially
in multistage centrifugal, suction side will have
relatively very less pressure as compared to
the discharge side.

Pre Operational Checks
Feed Water Charging of BFP

• Before charging feed water line ensure adequate deaerator level.

• Ensure that Suction (FSV-3), Discharge (FDV-6), Discharge bypass (FDV-6A)
are in close condition initially.
• Close suction strainer drain and discharge NRV after drains (FDV-105,
FDV-106).
• Close recirculation line atmospheric drains (FCV-111, FCV-112).
• Open booster pump casing air vent and feed pump suction and discharge
air vent.
• Open Suction Valve slightly from local and charge feed water line of BFP.
• Close all air vents after air completely vented out and open Suction Valve
(FSV-3) fully.
• Open recirculation control valve (FCV-5) and its isolation valve (FCV-6).
• Observe for suction and discharge pressure readings after pump charging.
Feed water charging of HP Heaters up to
Feed Water Control Station
• Keep HP Bypass spray manual valve at 8.5 ML / All feed water control station valves (FDV-13,
FDV-14, FDV-15 and FDV-16) / Super heater spray valves closed, if necessary.

• Keep the top most vent (FDV-127, FDV-128) at Feed Water Control Station Open.

• Keep close all atmospheric drains of suction and discharge feed water lines (FDV-109, FDV-
110, FDV-111, FDV-112, FDV-113, FDV-114, FDV-117, FDV-118, FDV-121, FDV-122, FDV-147,
FDV-148, FDV-129, FDV-130, FDV-131, and FDV-132).

• Keep open inlet & outlet water box air vents for all HP Heaters (FDV-115, FDV-116, FDV-123,
FDV-124, FDV-119, FDV-120, FDV-125, FDV-126, FDV-107 and FDV-108).
• Keep open inlet and outlet of HP heaters- 5A & 6A (FDV-7, FDV-8) and HP heaters- 5B & 6B
(FDV-9, FDV-10) and open HP heater bypass valves (FDV-11, FDV-12) for charging.

• Open discharge valve bypass of MDBFP (FDV-6A) and by gravity charge the feed water line up
to the feed water control station.

• Once water comes out of heaters vents, close all vents.

• Close discharge valve bypass of MDBFP (FDV-6A) and close HP heater bypass valves (FDV-11,
FDV-12) after charging.
Ensure MDBFP HC oil level adequate.
Ensure MDBFP AOP electrical supply normalized.
Ensure DMCW to MDBFP working oil and lube oil coolers MOV (DMV-41) power
module ON condition
Ensure DMCW inlet / outlet valves are open for duplex seal coolers and isolation
valves of duplex magnetic filters.
Ensure DMCW isolation valves to Booster pump jacket cooling, Motor Coolers,
BFP jacket cooling, working oil and lube oil coolers are all in open condition.
Ensure booster pump and feed pump seal water inlet and outlet valves are in
open condition.
Ensure proper venting for seal water lines and DMCW lines.
Ensure local pressure & temperature gauges are lined up and all Instrument
transmitters are lined up.
Release the Local EPB and inform control room to start the pump.

OPERATION PROCEDURE:

Start MDBFP AOP and observe lube oil and working pressure.
Observe for any leakage and monitor MDBFP HC oil level.
Keep Scoop in 0 position and check for all starting permissive.
Ensure power source channel selection for the pump is normalized and after getting clearance from
the local, start the pump in recirculation.
Check auto opening of motor cooler MOV (DMCW-41).
Observe for any abnormal noise/vibration in the running equipment’s.
Observe working oil & lube oil pressure / suction & discharge pressure / bearing temperature in DCS
and local gauges.
Ensure recirculation flow through the pump.
Monitor bearing temperature rise, oil pressure & temperature, winding temperature of motor,
suction filter DP.
By opening discharge valve and its bypass maintain drum level. For initial operation use 30% line for
controlling drum level. At a drum pressure of > 80 kg/cm², change to 100 % line (FDV-16) and isolate
30% line (FDV-13, FDV-14 and FDV-15).
Before stopping the pump ensure scoop in 0 position and ensure discharge and its bypass valve
(FDV-6, FDV-6A) closed.
Stop the pump and observe MDBFP AOP started in auto.
Apply local EPB.
ISOLATION PROCEDURE:

MDBFP both source breaker racked out locked and tagged.

MDBFP AOP module supply off locked and tagged.
Ensure Suction (FSV-3), Discharge (FDV-6), Discharge
bypass (FDV-6A) recirculation control valve (FCV-5) and its
isolation valve (FCV-6) are in close condition and tagged, if
necessary.
Open suction strainer drain and discharge NRV after drains
(FDV-105, FDV-106).
Open booster pump casing air vent and feed pump suction
and discharge air vent.
