 Ways to Create the
illusion of Space
1. Overlap- one object
appears tobe behind the
others
2. Shading - light and
shadow create the
illusion of form and
space

3. Placement or
location-objects
higher in the
picture appear to
be in the distance
4. Size- small objects look
distant, while closer
objects
should be larger
5. Color and Value- objects that
are closer to the viewer appears
darker in value or warm in
color, Objects that are far away
from the viewer appear lighter
in value or cooler in color
The space in landscape drawing has
three parts namely:

1. foreground- is the part that is at

the very front and often near the
bottom of the drawing, the objects
appear closest to the viewer
2. middle ground- part of between
the foreground and background
3. background – is the part that
appears farthest from the viewer
