 1. Introduction

Society for Human and Environmental Development (S.H.E.D.)

was established with the aim of building a self-reliant and
sustainable culture empowering and developing
underprivileged, marginalized and vulnerable sections,
especially women and girls through activities promoting
human dignity. They run various programmes for
education, awareness, skill training for income generation,
values/citizenship, communal harmony, brotherhood,
national integration, health, nutrition and environment.
The Society for Environment and Human Development (SEHD)
is a non-profit Bangladeshi organization working for human
rights and environmental justice through research, training,
dialogue and advocacy. Operating since 1993, SEHD works
closely with communities where environmental and human
rights have been eroded.

 2. Programmes

Volunteers and Interns

 
SEHD welcomes both international and local volunteers and interns
to its office in Dhaka and to field locations where it works. People
from different fields and countries have volunteered and interned
with SEHD in the past, helping in a number of areas such as
research, writing, translation, editing, information technology and
capacity building.

Documentation Library
 
SEHD runs a documentation library at its office in Dhaka with special
emphasis on the environment, human rights, ethnic issues, excluded
groups, social exclusion, elections and democracy, and the media.
Anyone is welcome to use the library.

 3. Vocational Coaching

• The focus is on imparting education and creating a strong

educational
• background for children between 1 to 13 years of age.
• S.H.E.D runs a Crèche where day care, midday meals, health care,
and sleeping
• facilities are provided to slum children. They can play, rest, and
learn without any hindrances. So far, 630 children have
benefitted.
• S.H.E.D runs 3 balwadis in the slum communities of Mumbai with
the aim
• to impart pre­school education through interactive methods and
to develop cognitive, creative, and language skills in young
children. Midday meals are also provided.

 4. Problems faced

In order to have make a study for product positioning through

packaging, as discussed in the literature review, shape and design
plays an important role. Both of these aspects should make it a
differentiator to the brand along with communication the value
proposition from the brand.
Before we move a ahead proposing the pack shapes for the brand
health eatos, lets see what are packaging used by the
competitors in the market, and what is common in them and by
comparing them what takeaways we could get.

 5. Learning Experience

Working at SHED has certainly given all of us a great

experience in learning various aspects about things in real
life. We all have been amazed by how the people living in
slums manage to live a life like that. This has certainly been
one of our best experiences in our life as we have managed
to understand what are the conditions of the people living in
the slums and tribal areas.

Some of our learning experiences have been

 
It gave us the opportunity to learn and understand the
problems faced by those people.
It was good to see how SHED provided them with basic
amenities such as health check-ups, nutritional programs for
children and also educational facilities for children and
grownups.
We got to see how the training was given to the employees
there in order to provide these facilities for the people.

 6. SWOT Analysis

Strengths
 
One of the main founders of the organization was Begum
Bilkees Latif who was the wife of former Governor of
Maharashtra, I.H. Latif and hence SHED has strong backing
from the state.

Weaknesses
Since not a very big NGO, funding problems persist.
Weak organizational mandate which leads to weak HR
policies.
No motivation to work hence the targets set cannot be
achieved to its fullest.
Limited online reach which is a limitation for the NGO to
expand anywhere beyond Mumbai.

 7. Conclusion

All in all, our perception before the NGO Internship was that the
NGO involved people coming together with the same mind-set to
do something better for the society and taking the necessary
steps. We had no knowledge about all the small yet important
activities that take place in the back end which actually lead to
successful functioning. However, after working there for a week
we realised there is more to it than just creating social
awareness. Interacting with the kids and the other students
made us realise that they have every right to learn and grow in
their own way. The students were very curios to learn new things
and also were too bright to grasp things fast. With right guidance
and resources even they can reach incredible heights. It made us
realise that education is the solution to a lot of problems like
poverty, unemployment and of course illiteracy. It was very
enriching of an experience to know the other side of the story
and we would like to thank Dr. Durga Surekha for giving us this
opportunity and helping us become better individuals.
