Introduction

• Antenna performance and size have a large impact on the development of

wireless system especially the size is very important in some applications
as mobile phone and military portable devices as radars , planes, …., etc .

• It is more complicated to provide the typical parameters like Bandwidth,

Efficiency, and Gain within the limited antenna volume.

• This is more critical with respect to the UWB Antenna.

Patch Antenna

• Patch antennas are extensively used in different wireless

applications due to:
• Low profile
• Light weight
• Easy to fabricate
• Low cost
The major drawback is narrow bandwidth
Solution is Bow-tie Antenna

in the fig CPW Bow-tie antenna

UWB Antenna Design
Challenge
• Compact size while providing acceptable:
1- VSWR
2- Bandwidth
3- Gain
4- Efficiency
• Omni-directional pattern
• To be suitable for on chip design, with good impedance matching
• Light weight
• Low cost

Slide 6
Our design

There is a trade off between the antenna parameters as gain ,

BW ,VSWR .

Our design goal Wide band and good reflection cofficient .

Resonance frequency 4.2 GHz .

Design parameters

• W=12.7 mm
• L=21.5 mm
• S=40 mm
• Wc=0.4 mm
Design equations
Simulation
Radiation pattern
S11 parameter

As shown the -10 dB bandwidth approximately 800 MHz

-20 dB at 4GHZ
Directivity and Gain
Question
• From the equation mentioned earlier determine the proper
length of the bowtie antenna to resonate at 2.4 GHz ??

• Is bowtie antenna an omni directional antenna right or

wrong ??
