Introduction

Cruise control: is a feature that helps reduce such fatigue

drivers would feel while driving a long distance.

The system imitates the way human drivers drive.

Instead of pressing the accelerator pedal, it uses an actuator to

control the throttle and helps your car continue cruising at the
same speed.
Cruise control (also known as speed control) is a system that
automatically controls the speed of a motor vehicle.
The system is a servomechanism that takes over the throttle of
the car to maintain a steady speed as set by the driver.
Cont…

You don't want to use it if you're in heavy traffic, if conditions

aren't steadily moving along, or if you're in a group of cars with a
lot of other vehicles around.
Only use it when you can hit the open road and continue to move
at a constant speed without interruption.
Functions of cruise control

It allows you to maintain a set speed without using the

accelerator.
Once you've selected the speed, you can take your foot
off the accelerator and the vehicle will cruise at that
speed.
 It allows drivers to keep their vehicle at a constant speed,
there is less risk of the driver accelerating and speeding
past other drivers.
 It limits the amount of fuel your engine uses and reduces
gas-wasting acceleration and deceleration.
CONT.....
 The cruise control feature is meant to minimise
 Drivers' fatigue while driving long distances, keeping
the car running at a constant speed without any manual
input.
 The driver doesn't need to keep the accelerator
 Pedal pressed and can let their foot relax
 It used to regulate the car speed without stepping on the gas
pedal.
Even so, there are the minimum and maximum limits for
this
feature to run.
CONT....

 The minimum speed limit for this feature can be used when the
car is above 40 km/hour.

 This feature is suitable for driving on toll roads with an

average speed of 60 km/hour.

 It used to detect the vehicle's distance in front of it when the

car is moving. This feature will also carry out automatic
braking commands with the help of embedded artificial
intelligence (AI) technology. You can find this function in cars
that use adaptive cruise control technology.
CONT....

 It controls the speed of your car the same way you do by

adjusting the throttle (accelerator) position. However, cruise
control engages the throttle valve by a cable connected to an
actuator, rather than by pressing a pedal.

 The throttle valve controls the power and speed of the engine
by limiting how much air it takes in (since It’s an internal
combustion engine).
Working principles

While driving on an open road for a long time, it would be

pretty tiring to keep pressing the accelerator pedal.
Cruise control is a feature that helps reduce such fatigue
drivers would feel while driving a long distance.
The system imitates the way human drivers drive.
But instead of pressing the accelerator pedal, it uses an
actuator to control the throttle and helps your car continue
cruising at the same speed.
CONT....
The cruise control system used in older cars is connected to the
accelerator through a cable to maintain the gas pedal in a certain
position to keep the pre-set speed.

Where as the system in newer cars electronically manages the speed

through a program without a cable. Instead, a computer connected
with various sensors and throttle controls operates the feature
through a wireless system.

This newer technology can automatically adjust the speed based on

how fast the vehicle ahead is going while maintaining a safe
distance.
CONT…

The driver will select how far he wishes the following

distance to be and the cruise control will maintain that
distance all the way up to the set speed.

This then applies the brakes to slow the car down and
maintain the following distance and, in some advanced
systems, will even be able to do emergency braking
Types of cruise control

There are different types of cruise control

these are:

1. Speed limiter: It's a safety device, and makes a long

journey easier to complete. It relieves you from the need to
keep checking your speed, by restricting
Adaptive cruise control
Is an available cruise control advanced driver-assistance
system for road vehicles that automatically adjusts the
vehicle

Semi-autonomous cruise control

It works largely the same as adaptive cruise control,
but assists drivers with lane guidance and steering.
Short method how to use cruise control
Cont…
How to use the cruise control feature is very easy because several
buttons are available for this feature
How to use it is as follows:

1.On/off button
The on/off button activates the cruise control feature. You can
look at the car dashboard to determine whether the feature is
active.

2. Res+ button
This button is useful for increasing the car's speed by 1 mph. If
the driver wants to increase the speed again, then simply press the
button or according to the desired speed requirements.
CONT…
3.Set- button
The set- button on a car with adaptive cruise control reduces the
previous speed by 1 mph. You just have to press a few times
depending on how much speed you want to reduce.
4.Cancel button
The cancel button is useful for deactivating the cruise control
feature. By pressing this button, the control feature will no
longer function
How to set cruise control

Cruise control is slightly different on each model of vehicle, but

most systems work in a very similar way. Follow these 5 steps to
start cruising:
1. Build your speed: cruise control is designed for driving at a
steady speed of at least 30 mph without constant stopping, so it’s
ideal for a motorway or dual carriage way.
2. Switch on cruise control:making sure it’s within the speed
limit, turn on the cruise control system. In most vehicles, the buttons
that control it appear on or behind the steering wheel, and a light
will appear on your dashboard once it’s turned on.
Important: before using cruise control for the first time, check your
handbook and locate the buttons so you’re not fumbling around
trying to find them while on the road which is clearly dangerous.
CONT.....
3.Set the cruise control: once you’ve switched the system on, press the
set button. This will communicate with your car to hold the current speed. In
most vehicles, this will turn the dashboard indicator green. After the cruise
control is set, you can remove your foot from the accelerator and the car should
maintain its speed.

4. To accelerate: most cars will have either an ‘up’ arrow or ‘+’ button to
allow you to raise the car’s speed. Pressing the accelerator pedal will normally
override the system.

5. To decelerate: either tap the down arrow or ‘-‘ button on the cruise
control system, or apply the brake. For safety reasons, cruise control will be
deactivated as soon as the brake is applied.
Other functions: the ‘cancel’ button pauses cruise control, giving you full control
again without the system fully switching off. It should retain the speed you
choose to cruise at.
If you want to return to your previously programmed speed, just press ‘resume

Advantage and disadvantage of cruise control

The car's cruise control feature was created to provide convenience

for the driver. However, this feature also has disadvantages you must
pay attention to before using it. You need to know the advantages

and disadvantages of cruise

control
Advantages:
Helps improve comfort when driving
Reducing fatigue while driving
Improves fuel efficiency
CONT…
 It improve driving comfort on long journeys as
There is no need to press the accelerator pedal.
It reduces driving fatigue to a great extent.

Disadvantages
 Cannot be used in traffic jams
 The system cannot detect dangerous
 Road conditions such as puddles which could pose a danger to
the driver.
 This system is not helpful in heavy traffic conditions with
varying speeds.
 Its inability to recognize the road surface may lead to skidding
on wet or icy surfaces.
