INTRODUCTION
A server accountable for backing up and restoring files, folders, databases and hard drives
on a network to avoid the loss of data in the event of a hard drive failure, user error, disaster
or accident.
Numerous backup server products and services available from third-party vendors,
Microsoft Windows Server operating systems also include a built-in Windows Server Backup
feature that can be used to perform basic backup and recovery operations on backup
servers.
An alternative to standard backup server software tools are online backup and recovery
services that save your network's data to a remote location in the cloud.
ALTERNATIVE ONLINE BACKUP
SERVICES/ SOFTWARE
OneDrive is a file hosting service and synchronization service operated by Microsoft as part of
its suite of Office Online services.
Google Drive is a file storage and synchronization service developed by Google. Launched on
April 24, 2012, Google Drive allows users to store files on their servers, synchronize files
across devices, and share files.
iCloud is a cloud storage and cloud computing service from Apple Inc. launched on October
12, 2011. As of February 2016, the service had 782 million users.
Mozy is an online backup service for both Windows and macOS
users. Linux support was made available in Q3, 2014. In 2007 Mozy
was acquired by EMC, and in 2013 Mozy was included in the EMC
Backup Recovery Systems division's product list.
IDrive Inc. is a technology company that specializes in data backup

applications. Its flagship product is IDrive, an online backup service
available to Windows, Mac, iOS and Android users.
WINDOWS SERVER BACK UP
Windows Server Backup is a built-in component of Windows Server 2008 R2 that

consists of a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, command-line tools,
and Windows PowerShell cmdlets. Windows Server Backup, like its predecessor –
Ntbackup (on Windows Server 2000/2003), provides a complete solution for your
day-to-day backup and recovery needs.

You can use Windows Server Backup to back up a full server (all volumes), a
selected list of volumes, the system state, or specific files or folders and to create a
backup that you can use for bare metal recovery.
Note: One thing to keep in mind is that you cannot recover backups with Windows Server Backup that were
created in earlier versions of Windows with Ntbackup. However, a read-only version of Ntbackup is freely
available if you want to recover data from backups created using Ntbackup, and can be installed to recover
files on Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7.
INSTALLING WINDOWS SERVER BACK UP
Open server manager

Click Features > click Add Features

In the Add Features Wizard page, scroll down and
click to select Windows Server Backup features.

Confirm installation by clicking install.

Displaying installation results. Click close
CREATING BACK UP USING WINDOWS SERVER
Click Start >
Administrative Tools >
click Windows Server
back up

Backup option. Select Different
options then click next.

Specifying backup destination. There are two types
of back up storage (a) local drivers it is a back up
destination that pertains to partition, another hard
drive, optical drive, and available volume for back
up (b) Remote shared folder it is a back destination
where all the files are being saved using shared
folder from other computer in the network. Select
your desired back up location, but in this lesson,
we are going to use local drives.

Setting-up the type of configuration. Click Full
server (recommended) > click Next

What type of configuration do you want to
schedule?
Full server (recommended) – is a type of back up
that everything resides in your server will backed
up.
Custom backup – it is a method where you able to
select manually all the things that you are going to
back up, you have freedom to choose what type of
files or docs that you are going to choose.
Select backup destination. Select the available disk
or volume (e.g. New Voume E:)> click Next

Warning message. This message will occur if you are
going to set a backup from the same hard disk but
different volume/partition. This type of back up is
not recommended. If you are working with
enterprise using different forms of medium (e.g.
RAID, network backup, another hard disk) to back
up is much better. Click OK to continue.

Confirm backup. Click backup to start the
operation.

Click close.

HOW TO PERFORM DATA
RECOVERY USING WINDOWS
SERVER
Open server manager. Click start > click
Administrative tools > Windows Server Backup

On the right-side of corner click Recover.

need to choose A
backup stored in
another location.

Select for available backup
date > click next

Select the type of recovery you are going to perform.

a. If you are going to perform a specific files or
folder recovery you must choose File and
Folders > look for available item > choose
your desired files then click next > choose >
Recovery destination > click next > click
recover.
b. IF you are going to perform System state
restoration you must choose System state >
Click next > then choose where do you
want to recover the system state to? >
choose your desired location. Click next >
click recover.
