Contrast
Contrast

• Our physical impressions are made possible through contrast.

• In architecture, we can understand buildings because of the
contrast of its visual characteristics.
• In design, the right amount of contrast can achieve quality
spaces and meaningful and expressive buildings.
Types of Contrast

1. Contrast of form
2. Contrast of line
3. Contrast of size
4. Contrast of tone
5. Contrast of color
6. Contrast of character

• Contrasting forms reveal contrast in shapes and mass.
• Contrast of form is used to emphasize features of a building and
signify its importance.
• Contrast of form can create interesting visual patterns and
induce a sense of movement.
2.Contrast
of line

• Contrast of line affects linear direction and orientation of

elements.
• Corners, edges, articulation can be made different to get the
desired character and surface quality of the building.

• Variation of sizes of elements of a building creates interest and
emphasis.
• Gradation-if the difference in size is gradual and consistent.
4.Contrast
of tone

• Contrast of tone creates depth, reveals the visual weight of the

elements and the whole building itself.
• Contrast of tone can be achieved by using materials with
different tones and colors, applying different textures and
using corners and making the façade irregular to allow light
and showing shades and shadows striking the surfaces.
5.Contrast
of color

• Different colors create different moods and character in a

space.
• Color combinations excite the senses and it can also create dull
environments.
• Contrast of color can be achieved by using materials with
inherent color or with the use of transparent materials
revealing the color from the interior.
6.Contrast of character

1 2
• A building can express two different character with its
composition.
• A building can also express a different character through its
appearance and another through its function
Contrast

• Too much contrast in a space can create confusion to the

senses.Dissimilarity of elements and features result to visual
stress, loss of attention and focus and loss of sensitivity.
• Inadequate contrast result into spaces with lack of realism,
monotony and ineffective in its purpose.
• In architecture and design, the right amount and adequate
balance of contrast is intended for spaces. Different spaces and
functions requires their own different amount of contrast.
