Social Inequality
1 Types
of
Social Inequalities
According to Rowntree Foundation (2008)
Inequality of Outcome
An individual does not have the same
level of material wealth or overall living
economic condition compared to others.
Treatment Inequality
Some people benefit more and can
quickly receive more privileges than others.
There is disparity in access to public
health, housing, and social security
services. 3
Opportunity Inequality
People living in the same society do not
have the same access to the same
opportunities because of their social
location.

Political Inequality
It pertains to unequal ability to access
governmental resources and unequal
political participation 4
Membership Inequality
Groups in the society do not experience
equality in value.

5
Social inequality occurs when group or
individuals receive less of what we regard as
valuable goods (Hradil 2003; Hoffman, 2008). It
has to do with wealth (the possession one has
such as bank accounts and other objects with
monetary value), power (authority to influence
over others’ will), and prestige (respect or
regard to someone due to his/her achievements
and superiority).

The following are some suggested
strategies to reduce inequality by
Bonilla (2016).
Pro-poor fiscal policy
Financial incentives for poor entrepreneurs can
boost them to enter formal sector. The government
may provide social security for them and make it easier
for them to pay taxes according to their status and
revenue.

Financial assistance for banks can encourage them

to lend money to the poor entrepreneurs as the
government provides guarantee and may create
funding programs for poor.

Better targeting of social programs

- focused on helping to reduce income,

education, and health-related inequality.

- Income transfer program (Conditional Cash

Transfer or the 4Ps in the Philippines) can have
a long term impact for the poorest of
the poor.
9
Participatory decision- making

- focused on the voices of the poor and

other sectors (farmers, artists etc.) for
policy- making.

10
Revision of legislative frameworks that
foster inequality

- aims to identify unfair laws or laws that

cause inequalities among groups.

- laws that neglect domestic labor as

productive and essential or social security
schemes that have no general access.
11
Promotive action

- media movements and advocacies

identifying and promoting participation of
discriminated groups to various social
activities in order to boost their confidence.

12
Addressing regional inequality

- improving farm to market roads as well

as decentralization of public services in
order to share prosperity among regions
and far flung areas.

13
Differentiated poverty reduction policies

- Different policies are needed to

address each case of poverty since it has
different dynamics in every community.

14
Measuring other inequalities, rather than
just income inequality

- Most inequalities are perpetuated by

institutions.

- There is a need to identify other

inequalities such as health, political and
others.
15
Program Monitoring and Evaluation

- determining the impact and progress of

a program has a lot of contribution to the
improvement of the society’s system.

- knowing to continue or change the

program for a certain sector

16
Finding ways to address inequality is a corporate
concern and duty of our government, stakeholder and
every citizen of the Philippines. Achieving social
equality is a long journey for every system. In order
for our country to thrive, there is a need for everyone
to participate in seeking ways to improve our current
situation
