BENZENE

PRESENTED BY QUDSIA BATOOL

WHAT IS BENZENE?

• Benzene is an organic chemical compound with

the molecular formula C₆H₆.
• The benzene molecule is composed of six
carbon atoms joined in a planar ring with one
hydrogen atom attached to each.
• Because it contains only carbon and hydrogen
atoms, benzene is classed as a hydrocarbon
STRUCTURE OF BENZENE

• Benzene is a cyclic hydrocarbon (chemical formula:

C6H6).
• Each carbon atom in benzene is arranged in a six-
membered ring and is bonded to only one hydrogen atom.
• According to molecular orbital theory, benzene ring
involves the formation of three delocalized π – orbitals
spanning all six carbon atoms.
• while the valence bond theory describes two stable
resonance structures for the ring. Structure of Benzene
IMPORTANCE OF BENZENE

• Benzene is a widely used industrial chemical. Benzene is found in crude oil and
is a major part of gasoline.
• It's used to make plastics, resins, synthetic fibers, rubber lubricants, dyes,
detergents, drugs and pesticides.
• Benzene is produced naturally by volcanoes and forest fires.
• In homes, benzene may be found in glues, adhesives, cleaning products, paint
strippers, tobacco smoke and gasoline.
• Most benzene in the environment comes from our use of petroleum products.
PHARMACEUTICAL
APPLICATION OF BENZENE

• Benzene used as a solvent in the pharmaceutical industry and can be found in certain drugs.
• Historically, benzene was also used as an industrial solvent and gasoline additive.
• Used as a raw material in the synthesis of styrene (polystyrene plastics and synthetic
rubber), phenol (phenolic resins), cyclohexane (nylon), aniline, maleic anhydride
(polyester resins), alkylbenzenes (detergents), chlorobenzenes, and other products used in
the production of drugs, dyes, insecticides, and plastics.
