THEORIES RELATED TO

THE LEARNERS
DEVELPMENT
The educational trend brought about by a
number of ground-breaking researches
tellsthat one can be an effective facilitator of
learning if one has a good working knowledge
of thelearners’ development. Previously in
your Child and Adolescent Development and
LearningPrinciples course, the foundational
theories related to the learners/ development
werediscussed.
This are the content that we tackled today:

• Sigmund Freud-components of the personality/psychosexual

theory

• Erik Erikson -Psychosocial theory

• Jean Piaget-Cognitive theory

• Lawrence Kohlberg-Moral development theory

• Lev vygotsky- Socio-cultural theory

• Urie bronfenbrenner- Bio-Ecological theory

ADVANCE ORGANIZER
The ideas of the theorists Freud,Erikson, Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg, and
Bronfrenbrennerremain to be foundational to the teacher’s understanding
ofthe learners’ development. Let us recall highlights of theirtheories. Freud
said,” The mind is like and iceberg, it floats with one-seventh of its bulk
abovewater.” This is of course the very famous analogy that that Freud
referred to when he explainedthe subconscious mind. He believed that
much of what the person is really about is not what wesee in the outside
and what is conscious, but what is there hidden in the subconscious mind.
Asteachers, it is important that we remember not to be quick in making
conclusions about ourstudents’ intentions for their actions. Always
consider that there are many factors that mayinfluence one’s behavior.
