Human development
in Socio-cultural

 The sociocultural theory is a developmental theory created by Lev Vygotsky and

Alexander Luria. The theory concentrate on the individual development of individuals
and the vital contributions that society makes to them
 The theory of socio-culture applies to every individual in their different stages of life as

Socio-Culture Context
Socio-culture Perspective
 “Sociocultural theory maintains that social interaction and cultural institution, such as schools ,
classrooms , etc. , have important roles to play in an individuals cognitive growth and development “.
 As indicated by the sociocultural approach , cultural factors such as language , art ,social norms and
social structures can play a critical part in the development of our cognitive abilities
 The theory was developed by Lev Semyonovich Vygotsky in the 1930s.
 Vygotsky claims that there are three cultural tools which kids use to inform cognitive abilities.
 Humans ability to recall information is a result of our understanding of complex language
Western Theories of
Human Development

 Lev Vygotsky
 Cognitive development involves he active internalisation of critical thinking
processes as a result of mutual interaction between children and others
 Kids figure out how to thoroughly consider their cooperation's with others
 Piaget saw the child as a scientist ,while Vygotsky saw the kid as an apprentice
 John Locke
 The founder of Morden educational philosophy
 Build the idea of “tabula Rosa”, the belief that the child is born neutral, rather then evil ,
and is “clean slate “of which experiences are written
 One of the first to discuss peoples l differences and that education needs to consider
singular learner.
 the three most essential contributions of Locke are:
 Individual differences
 Giving children reasons
 Theory of the “clean slates”.
 Jean Piaget(1896-1980)

cognitive development

Urie Bronfenbrenner's
ecological development
Current Perspectives
of Human Development
Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological development

• Urie Bronfenbrenner (1917-2005) developed the ecological systems theory to explain how
everything in a child and the child's environment affects how a child grows and develops.
1

• The different stages or levels of developing process are:

• Microsystem
• Mesosystem
2 • Exosystem
• Macrosystem
Conclusion

Different theorists such as John Locke, Vygotsky and Jean Piaget have their own different opinions and views
on human development. The most associated theory in this era is Urie Bronfenbrenners ecological model
which I support. This ecological model clearly states the 4 basic stages of child developing from its
microsystem to mexosystem to exosystem and lastly to macro system. In my own Muslim context the 5
pillars of Islam and other traditional customs are essential and closely associated in the process of human
development, for the well-being of the child.
