FLOOR PLAN AND ELEVATION: LESSON OBJECTIVE
At the end of this Unit, you should be able to:
• Define relevant terminologies in floor plans and elevations.
• Understand symbols and notations used on plans
• Describe what is being presented on the plans
• Analyse the layout of the structure shown on the plan
• Determine the actual lengths of object shown on plans using measurement and a given
scale (number or bar scale)
• Determine quantities of materials needed by using the plans and perimeter, Area and
volume calculations.

Floor an indication of an object or plan as seen from above, as if you
plan/layout have taken off the roof of the building/structure to look inside.

Mr and Mrs Swart retired recently. They intend
to move to a complex for senior citizens which
is still in a developmental stage. They were
provided with several floor plans from which
they could choose the type of house which
may fit their lifestyle. They were allowed to
suggest a reorganisation of the inside layout,
but the exterior walls must remain as shown
on the plan. Use the plans and information
provided, to answer the questions that follow.
