Intersection Complement
Null Union
Cardinality Sets

1. The set of all elements which are common in Set A and B and that can be denoted using the
symbol ‘∩’.

2. A collection of “things” (objects or numbers, etc.).

3. A set containing all elements that are in A or in B (possibly both) and can be denoted using
symbol ‘∪’.
INTERSECTIO ∪
N AND UNION
OF SETS

OBJECTIVES
Difine and differentiate intersection and
01 union of sets

02 Solve intersection and union of sets

INTERSECTION OF
SETS
The intersection of the sets A and B is a set which consists
of all common elements of A and B. Formally, it is written
A∩ B = {x|x € A and x € B }.

EXAMPLE
A= { 1,2,6,7,9,} B= { 6,7,0}

A ∩ B = { 6,7}
EXAMPLES
A= { 4,9,6,2,0} A= { 5,3,9,2,0}.
01 B = { 4,9,2} 02 B = { 5,3,9,10}
A ∩ B = { 4,9,2} A ∩ B = { 5,3,9}

A= { 6,7,11,45}.
03 B=
{ 11,8,45,9}
A ∩ B = { 11,45}
UNION OF SETS
The union of the sets A and B is a set whose elements
are elements of both sets. It is denoted by A ∪ B =
{x| x € A or x € B}.

EXAMPLE
A = { 1,2,4,6,8,10,76} B = { 23,34,56,78,79}

A U B = { 1,2,4,6,8,10,23,34,56,76,78,79}
EXAMPLES
A= {1,2,3,4,5}
01 B= {8,9,10,11,12}
A U B = { 1,2,34,5,8,9,10,11,12}

A= {12,25,67,89,101}
02 B= {202,206,87,67,89}
A U B = { 12,25,67,89,101,202,206,87,67,89}
MECHANICS
• Student will be divided into 3 groups

• Each group must provide a blank bondpaper and a marker

• All members must participate in answering the problem

• Every correct answer is equivalent to 2 points

• First to have 6 points will declare as a winner

Answer me !
Direction : Solve the following problem
1. A= {1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10,11,12, 19, 20}

B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
2. A= {1, 2, 3} Find A U B
B = {5, 10, 15}

Find A U B

3. A= {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 , 7 ,8,9,45,35 }
B = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10}
Find A U B
4. A= { 45,55,67,89,356,90}
B = { 100,657,45,68,90}
Find A ∩
B

5. A= { 12,13,14,15,18,20}
B = {1,2,3,4, 15,19,20}
Find A ∩
B
Evaluation
Direction : Do the following exercises. Write your answers on ½ crosswise.

A = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4}

B = {0, 2, 4, 6, 8}

C = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}

Find:
1. A ∩ C
2. B U A
3. C U A
4. A U B
5. B ∩ A
Assignment
Direction: Write this on your assignment notebook and solve this problem.

Let A, B and C be three sets such that:
A = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12}
B = {3, 6, 9, 12, 15}
C = {1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16}
Find:
1.A ∪ B
2. A ∩ B
3. B ∩ A
4. B ∪ A
5. B ∪ C
6.Is A ∪ B = B ∪ A?
7. Is B ∩ C = B ∪ C?

CONCLUSIONS
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the
smallest one in the Solar System—it’s only a bit larger
than our Moon. The planet’s name has nothing to do
with the liquid metal since it was named after the
Roman messenger god, Mercury
