Causes of Drug Addiction in Youth

Once, I was in love with Neha. She had ocean blue

eyes and silky smooth hair. It was a love at first sight.
Unfortunately, our relationship didn’t last long. She
broke up with me for my handsome friend.
Drowning into depression, I looked for some refuge.
To pull me out of my misery my friend introduced
me to drugs. And within a year, I became a shell of
my former self. Hence, even the smallest of the
mistakes can lead to a forever
lasting drug addiction. There are numerous causes
for drug addiction which include it’s
convenient accessibility, depression and bad
company.
In today’s society drugs are readily available
at several places and is offered by many people. The
main reason for many young addicts in our society is
that drug dealers are present at all major educational
institutes, markets and shopping centres. Not only
this, but now drugs are available online which makes
drugs much easier for our youth to access. Especially
when each of them
have a mobile phone at hand.
Even if the sites are banned they can use
other software to do that.
In today’s society depression is a leading cause of drug
addiction. Over the past decade, the number of people
suffering from depression has increased fourfold and
so has the number of drug addicts. Moreover, several
psychological researches have made it clear that there
is a direct relationship between depression and drug
addiction. People during their down period are more
likely to become addicted to cheap dopamine sources
like drugs. Hence, when the youth succumbs to
mounting pressure they inadvertently move closer to
becoming drug addicts.
In addition to this, societal and peer pressure can
sometimes lead, even the best of us, down the dismal
path of drug addiction. If you have a friend, who is a
drug addict, he would have surely urged you to try
drugs at least once. Moreover, the urge to look ‘çool’
by doing drugs in front of friends and peers can be
overpowering especially if one or more of your friends
are themselves using drugs. Sometimes, friends
challenge each other to try drugs not knowing that
this inconsequent challenge could prove
to be the first step towards addiction.
Hence, we can conclude with absolute certainty that
there are innumerable causes for drug addiction,
with three of the major causes being the increasing
availability of drugs, poor mental health of
youngsters and their mischievous friends. Drug
addiction can be menace for the society, therefore,
there is an urgent need to control it, especially in
youth, which can be done by restricting illegal drug
usage.
