 Shoring Materials
• Shore: a portable beam. Douglas Fir or Yellow
Pine preferred (straight grained, cured woods)
– Carried in lengths of 16ft to 18ft and should
never be painted
– The length of a shore should never be more
than 30 times its minimum thickness
• a shore of 4in x 4in or 4in x 6in should not
be any longer than 10ft (4in x 30 = 120in)
• Wedge: a block, triangular on the sides and
rectangular on the end
– Made of Fir or Yellow Pine (soft woods)
– Approximately the same width as the shores
it’s being used with and about 6 times as long
as it is thick (if a shore is 4in x 4in, the wedge
should be about 4in wide, 2in thick, 12in long)

• Shole: a flat block that may be

placed under the end of a
shore to distribute pressure

• Strongback : a bar or beam of

wood or metal that is used to
distribute pressure or to serve
as an anchor for a patch. The
strongback is often shorter
than a shore

• Model 6-11 is adjustable from 6ft to 11ft and can

• Advantages: Can also be welded into place,
fireproof, easier to store, less materials need,
greater variety of use, prefabricated
