EFFECTIVENESS OF ONLINE LEARNING

IN ASSEsSING SWIMMING SKILLS AND

WATER SURVIVAL COMPETENCY
AMONG THIRD YEAR BPED
BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Assessment of swimming and survival skills is a crucial part of any
swimming and lifesaving program. Inadequate skills assessment and
verification might lead to ineffective skills acquisition and
development, to a false sense of safety and over confidence in the
water that can be extremely dangerous. Assessor experience and
observation skills, assessment methodology, and criteria are all closely
inter-linked and their interaction will somehow determine the
assessment outcomes.

2
BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Our paper analyses some of the current issues in these
areas of the assessment process, such as assessor’s lack
of theoretical knowledge and experience, criteria not fit
for purpose, and methodological constraints The
purpose of this study is to know what is more
convenient in assessing swimming skills and water
survival whether in online or face-to-face class. To show
how the students deal with struggles in assessing
swimming skills and water survival because of the
implications of the online class.

HELLO!

BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Many swimming and lifesaving programs, although well-structured on paper,
lack valid and reliable skills assessment and verification, which in turn might
lead to inadequate skills acquisition and development, to a false sense of
safety and to over confidence in the water that, as we all know, can be
extremely dangerous. Too often the assessment of swimmers’ skills tends to
be the weakest. This study will try to highlight some of the current issues in
swimming and survival skills assessment among 3rd Year BPED students in
Urdaneta City University.

CONCEPTUAL
PARADIGM

5
This study has been conceptualize based on the other review literature and
studies of the other researchers that are connected to our research study
“EFFECTIVENESS OF ONLINE LEARNING IN ASSESSING SWIMMING
SKILLS AND WATER SURVIVAL COMPETENCY AMONG THIRD YEAR
BPED STUDENTS” In this concept we use the IV- DV model or the model we
use INDEPENDENT VARIABLE AND DEPENDENT VARIABLE this model to
visually describes our research.

STATEMENT OF THE
PROBLEM
This research has a chief concern about the
effectiveness of online learning in assessing
swimming skills and water survival competency
among third year BACHELOR OF PHYSICAL
EDUCATION students. To obtain all the essential
knowledge, data and information the research
sought to answer the critical questions as follow.

9
 1.To what extent have the student- swimmers really met the criteria?

 2.How valid and reliable is the assessment process?

 3.Are the criteria themselves valid for intended purpose?

 4.Are the student-swimmers consistent and comfortable in their

performance or would they be in difficulty under stress and/or in a

different environment?

10
The is a significant difference between assessing the
effectiveness of online learning and traditional
learning/face to face in swimming skills and water
survival competency among third year BPED student.

11
REASEARCH
DESIGN
The researcher will analyze the disadvantages of distance learning in

acquiring quality instruction in swimming of 3rd year BACHELOR OF

PHYSICAL EDUCATION students in URDANETA CITY UNIVERSITY using the

descriptive-correlational research approach. According to Best (1989), this

method is concerned with the descriptive study of "what is," the state of

existing relationships, prevalent practices, beliefs, ongoing processes, and

emerging trends.


13
 According to Calderon (1994), descriptive research entails the description,

recording, analysis, and interpretation of nature or processes. This study

will delve into the students’ profiles and differences in perception, as well

as the students ‘performance in different environment due to distance

learning. The result of the study will assess if the students really acquired

the desired quality education and skills.

DATA GATHERING
INSTRUMENTS
A Survey instrument and a checklist questionaire will be conducted for this

study to determine the extent on how the student-swimmers met the set

criteria/standards. Survey and checklist questionaire statement/indicators will

be based on the study of (Eider, 2015), and other related literature studies

referring to online learning in assessing swimming skills and water survival

competency. In this study, the student-swimmers will be assesed based on the

16
two (2) components of swimming class namely: the swimming skills and

water survival competency of each respondent. Assessor's experience and

observation skills on swimming and assessment methodology and criteria which

are closely inter-linked and their interaction as well will determine the

assessment outcomes.

17
 The instrument will be validated by five (5) experts using the criteria

developed by Meimban (1999). Likewise the reliability of the survey and

checklist questionaire will be determined through the random sampling that

will be conducted among the third year BPED students of Urdaneta City

University, a semi-private univery in which the researchers are based. All

responses will be coded to assure that confidentiality will be protected.

18
DATA GATHERING
PROCEDURE
Prior to the distribution of the questionnaires, approval of the head of the

BACHELOR OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION will be secured. Prior to this

pandemic We the researchers will electronically distribute the questionnaires to

our respondents

The data gathering procedure will cover from the span of March to Aprill

2022 The distribution and retrieval will be facilitated by the BACHELOR OF

PHYSICAL EDUCATION head and guidance councilors.
