CREATIVE
CHALLENGE
A way of thinking that seeks new answers to old inflexible problems through unorthodox methods
or elements that would normally be ignored by logical or analytical thinking.
What is
Creative Challenge?

Challenging the uniqueness of the way we do things or look at things in terms of

dominating concepts, assumptions, reasons, avoidance factors or values (factors
shaping our thinking).
What is
Creative Challenge?

The creative challenge [or dissatisfaction] does not set out to criticize, judge, or find
fault. The creative challenge operates outside of judgement. The creative challenge
is a challenge to “uniqueness”. No matter how excellent this may be, is it the only
way of doing this?”

Challenge
There is something very special about the
creative challenge

Questions 01 Why is it done this way?

of Creative 02 Why does it has to be done this

Challenge way?

03 Are there other ways of doing it?

What is Creative Challenge? SUPPOSITION
Current Way of doing things
There is often a supposition that the “current way of doing things must be the best” for the
following reasons:

Current Way of
Doing Things

So there is a sort of tacit agreement that unless proved otherwise the “current way of doing things” is very likely to be the
best way of doing them.
The Creative challenge is totally
01 different from the critical challenge.
What is
Creative 02 The critical challenge sets out to assess
whether the current way of doing

Challenge? something is adequate.

(different from
critical challenge) 03 We might set out to show that
something is faulty or inadequate and
then set about improving or changing
the way something is done.

04 This is normal improvement behavior.

This is NOT the Creative Challenge.
What is
Creative 01 The challenge does not set out to criticize,
judge, or find fault. The creative challenge

Challenge?
operates outside of judgement.

Challenge to
uniqueness
02 The creative challenge is a challenge
to “uniqueness”.

03 No matter how excellent this may be,

is it the only way of doing this?
What is
Creative 01 The creative challenge is sometimes
referred to as “creative
Challenge? dissatisfaction”.
Creative
dissatisfaction 02 In some ways this conveys the notion
of not being happy with accepting
something as the only possible way,
but “dissatisfaction” may also suggest
inadequacy.
What is
Creative Why is it important to be clear that the
creative challenge is not a criticism?
Challenge?
It is not the
criticism 01 The first point is that if the challenge
were a criticism then we should only
be able to challenge those things that
seemed inadequate.

This would seriously limit the range of

application of creativity.
02 The second point is that if we could not
make a convincing case of inadequacy

What is then we would be unable to suggest

looking for other ideas.

Creative 03 • The third point is that attack

engenders defense. If we set out to
attack something, then others will
Challenge? rush to defend an existing way of
doing things. A lot of unnecessary
time is used in attack and defence.

• Even worse, there will be a polarization between those

who defend the status quo and those who seem to be
attacking it. So it is much better to avoid judgement and to
indicate that there is no attack on the status quo but just an
exploration of other possibilities.

• Such possibilities would never replace the existing

methods unless the new ideas could be clearly shown to be
superior.
What is
Creative Challenge? 1. Block
Search for alternative ways of a) if we block the current path,

then we are forced to find an

Once we have made the
creative challenge then we
move on to the next step.
This is the search for

things. There are three

b) here the emphasis is on escape. If

need for the operation.

So that she can allocate resources as

A variation on the creative
challenge is to endeavor to seek
the “real reason” behind our
doing something. This process is

for the underlying problem. At the end of this process you

allocating resources. The method
has a value in untangling
complicated bureaucratic
procedures.
Why do we do things as we do?
There are a number of possible
answers to that question.

01 Because it was the best way of doing

things and it still is the best way of doing
things.
Continuity 02 Because we have considered changing

analysis to better way but the cost of change

are such that on balance we have
chosen to stay with this way.

03 Because we have always done it this

way and there has never any need, any
occasion, or any pressure for change.

The third answer brings in the notion of “continuity”.

Things continue because they continue.
• There are many possible reasons for
continuity. Four examples of the reasons are:
Reasons for
Continuity 1) The Continuity of Neglect
2) The Continuity of Lock-in
3) The Continuity of Complacency
4) The Continuity of Time Sequence

Breaking Free •BREAKING FREE (from old concepts)
•We seek to break free from old concepts that
from old concept are only there by reason of continuity.
Concepts and ideas that might have made
sense at one time may no longer be necessary
and may not make sense now.

1)

3)
Circumstance change
4)

•CONCEPT CHALLENGE AND IDEA CHALLENGE
•We can challenge the basic concept behind an operation or we can
challenge the particular way in which the concept is put into
action (the idea).
•We might challenge the concept of a city centre department store
or we may just challenge the location of stores in city centres.
Concept:

Does the concept have to be carried through in this way?

• Example of Concept and Idea Challenges

Concept and Idea • Faced with mounting traffic congestion, the Singapore
government has already challenge the assumed right of a
Challenge citizen to buy what he or she can afford. You can’t just buy a
car in Singapore. You first have to buy the right to buy a car.

• Should we be challenging the concept of traffic control in

cities or the concept of personalized travel in cities?.

• The concept of the free use of roads is being challenged.

There are schemes to charge cars according to which roads
they use and at what times. Sensors will record a car’s
passage and a bill will be sent to the driver.
Example of Concept and Idea Challenges

• There is no point in just challenging ideas when

Concept the fundamental concept behind the ideas needs
and Idea Challenges challenging.
• At the same time it is wrong to assume that the
underlying concept needs changing just because
the way it is carried through needs challenging.
• In England the introduction of the poll tax was one
of the causes of the downfall of Margaret Thatcher
as Prime Minister.
• Was it the concept of the poll tax that was at fault
or the way it was carried through?
Challenging the Shaping Factors
• At any moment, our thinking is
• shaped by a number of factors.

• Sometimes we are aware of the fac-

tors and sometimes they are so
much in the background that they
exert their powerful influence in a
hidden way.

• We can challenge these shaping fac-

tors just as we challenge existing
methods, concepts or ideas.

• But in this case, we are not challeng-

ing something that already exists. C E R T I F I C AT E

• We are challenging the factors and

pressures that lead us to think in a
certain way.
•Example:
Challenging the Shaping
•You may feel that you are free to choose what to put on
Factors in the morning when you get dressed.
•There are however, background considerations that we
take for granted: the sort of clothes you would wear to
the class. You could challenge these considerations.
•That is what we are doing when we challenge the
shaping factors of our thinking. We are not just
challenging the thinking itself (the choice of clothes) but
the background factors that actually limit our thinking
(or set the range of choice of clothes)
•This type of challenge can take place during a creative
session when there is actual thinking about a subject.
•We stand back and take a look at the thinking itself. We
pick out the shaping factors and challenge them.
• Example: ranges of clothes

Creative Challenge – A. Assumptions

01
Without assumptions we would
never be able to think at all.
Assumptions are based on
experience and narrow down the
range of possibilities in our thinking.
There is absolutely nothing wrong
with assumptions, which are most
valuable.

02 Nevertheless, it is useful to make ourselves aware of the

assumptions so that we can choose to challenge them.

03 What are the background assumption?

04 What are we assuming here?

05
In the problem of traffic congestion in
cities, we may be assuming that

suspended in the air).
-All cars may have equal access.

B. Boundaries

We work within the limits of what is

feasible, what is permissible, and what is
acceptable. If we wish our ideas to be
reasonable then we must work within the
boundaries of reason established by the
present state of our knowledge. As we shall
see later the process of “provocation” is a
deliberate method of jumping over the
boundaries of reasonableness. At this point
we are concerned with challenge.
Boundaries cont’d…

As with assumptions we need to make the

boundaries visible in order to challenge
them.

What are the boundaries to our thinking?

What boundaries do we come up against?

Boundaries cont’d…

In the problem of traffic congestion, we

quickly come up against the boundaries of
cost and of human acceptance. We come up
against the boundaries of technology (could
we really charge each car for the amount of
city road it uses each day?) Then there are
the physical boundaries of the existing town
and road layouts.
Boundaries cont’d…

Sometimes the challenge to boundaries

produces extreme ideas that are very like
provocations. At other times the boundaries
may produce a perfectly usable idea (every
person is entitled to use his or her car as a
taxi)
