Problem Solving

► What is a Problem?
► A problem arises when a living creature

has a goal but does not know how this goal

is to be reached. [A problem exists]
whenever one cannot go from the given
situation to the desired situation simply by
action. [K. Dunker, On Problem Solving,
(1945) p. 1]

► What is Problem Solving?

► Problem Solving is the process of working

out or discovering how to reach such a

goal.
What is Creative Thinking

► Creative thinking refers to thinking

differently and looking at
something in a new way.
► Creative thinking is about

approaching a
thought/idea/problem/situation in a
new and interesting way.
► It is a process of putting facts/

concepts/principles together in a
new and original ways.
► Business need to solve their

problem efficiently to find creative

solutions to problems.
Systematic approach of creativity

► “Creative thinking and problem solving is - looking at the same thing as everyone else and thinking
something different.” Adapted from a famous quote from a former Nobel prize winner, Albert Szent-
Gyorgi.
► The exact meaning of the Creative Thinking is “the process we use to develop ideas that are unique,
useful and worthy of further elaboration.”
► Creative problem solving (CPS) is a way of solving problems or identifying opportunities when
conventional thinking has failed. It encourages you to find fresh perspectives and come up with
innovative solutions, so that you can formulate a plan to overcome obstacles and reach your goals.
► Dealing with obstacles and challenges is a regular part of working life and overcoming them isn't
always easy. To improve your products, services, communications, and interpersonal skills, and for
you and your organization to excel, you need to encourage creative thinking and find innovative
solutions that work.
► CPS asks you to separate your "divergent" and "convergent" thinking as a way to do this. Divergent
thinking is the process of generating lots of potential solutions and possibilities, otherwise known as
brainstorming. And convergent thinking involves evaluating those options and choosing the most
promising one. Often, we use a combination of the two to develop new ideas or solutions
