The Author
Eric Arthur Blair, better known through his writer
name, George Orwell, is a novelist who is primarily
famous for his works including Animal Farm (the book
being presented), Nineteen Eighty-Four, The Road to
Wigand Pier, Homage of Catalonia and several more, is
an Indian-born writer. He was raised in the country of
England. While living as an imperial policeman, he
began his writing career as George Orwell. The
publication of "Animal Farm" led to his peak of fame
during his lifetime. He was ranked second among "The
50 Greatest British Writers since 1945" by the Times
(British daily newspaper).
Chapter-7 Summary
• The animals on Animal Farm are struggling to survive and are led to believe
that Snowball is sabotaging their work. Napoleon uses Mr. Whymper to
spread news of the farm's sufficiency to the human world. When the hens
are forced to surrender their eggs, they protest but eventually give in,
resulting in the death of nine hens. During a meeting in the spring, Napoleon
forces confessions from animals who had questioned him and has them
executed. The singing of "Beasts of England" is outlawed, and a new song is
introduced, although the animals do not find it as meaningful.
CHAPTER 8 SUMMARY

The animals work hard on the windmill, but they receive less food
despite Squealer's claims that production has increased. Napoleon
grows more powerful and is seen in public less frequently. Minimus
writes a poem that praises Napoleon's virtues, and more executions
occur. Napoleon sells a pile of timber to Frederick, who pays with
forged banknotes. After Frederick and his men attack the farm, the
animals manage to drive them away. The pigs discover whiskey and
Napoleon orders that drinking alcohol is punishable by death, but
he later changes his mind and orders the paddock to be planted
with barley. The chapter ends with Muriel noticing changes to the
Fifth Commandment.

FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS

• The shortage of food during the winter of the farm directly

compares to the early soviet union famines right after the civil war,
the author puts many different hints and similarities specifically to
the Russian famine of 1921–1922.
• The need for napoleon to hide the shortage of food and the mention
of cannibalism and infanticide are very similar to different foreign
broadcasts of the famine which reported similar effects in the soviet
union.
• The chickens rebelling against napoleon is relating to different
uprisings and rebellions that occured in the soviet union due to the
famine, notably the Kronstadt rebellion and the Tambov rebellion.
• The announcement that the hens must surrender their eggs is
similar to the New Economic Policy decreed by Lenin on 15
March 1921, in order to alleviate the effects of the famine.
• The repeated blame on snowball for every bad thing that befalls the farm is simlar to propaganda campaigns
instituted by the soviet state and stalin to damage Leon Trotsky's reputation, his fleeing to other farms is simlar
to Trotsky's own fleeing to Mexico after stalin took power.
• Napoleon allies with Frederick to sell surplus timber that Pilkington also sought, but is enraged to learn
Frederick paid him in counterfeit money. Shortly after the swindling, Frederick and his men invade Animal Farm,
killing many animals and destroying the windmill. The brief alliance and subsequent invasion may allude to
the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and Operation Barbarossa. Referring to the brief alliance between The German
Reich and The Soviet Union, as well as the ending betrayl.
