Effect of Lactoferrin On The Development of Beneficial Raya
Effect of Lactoferrin On The Development of Beneficial Raya
In vitro studies have demostrated that Lf from Human and Bovine
milk promotes the growth of interstinal bifidobacteria with out the
requirement for binding of the Lf molecule to the bacterial cell
surface or dependence on the acquisition and utilization of iron.
Suggesting that Lf may be a key factor in the initiation, development and composition of
neonatal gut microbiota.
These data indicate that Lf is tremendously important influence on the development of the
intestinal microbiome.
The importance of this function of Lf is magnified in critically ill and hospitalized term and
preterm infants who are risk for colonization and infection with highly pathogenic bacteria
and where Lf administration may be able to play a critical role in decreasing invasive infection
and necrotizing enterocolitis.
Recent studies have examined that effect of Lf on probiotic bacterial growth in vitro and
found that both hLf and bLf may retard the growth of certain bifidobacteria.
EFFECTS ON GUT GROWTH AND
MATURATION.
Lf has been found to directly stimulate intestinal growth and proliferation.
These data suggest that Lf may actively modulate enterocyte growth and
development in vivo due to variation in its concentration from colostrum to
mature milk, in addition to its stimulatory effects on intestinal enzymes
maturation.
These studies found that bLf was more potent effector of growth than hLf, which
provides rationale for its supplementation in infant formula.
Other studies have observed that Lf is taken up by enterocytes via the Lf receptor
and stimulates enterocytes proliferation through the Ras-MAPK pathway,
The strong mitogenic effect of which also may drive the rapid development of
the intestinal mucosa in newborns fed maternal milk.
