Discrete and Continuous

Random Variable
Lesson 1
What is a random variable?
Itis a variable whose values
are determined by chance
rather than a plan or pattern
A random variable is a

function that associates a real

number to each element in
the sample space.
What is a sample space?
 isa set of all possible outcomes
of an experiment.
 example:
◦ rolling a die - SS={1,2,3,4,5,6}
◦ tossing a coin-SS={H,T}
What are the types of random
variable?

is classified into discrete random

 It

variable and continuous random

variable.
Activity 1: Identify Me
 Identify whether the given
examples illustrate a discrete or
continuous random variable.
 Write your answer on your

statistics and probability

notebook.
1. Number of planets
around the sun
Discrete  Continuous
2. Number of stars in
space

Discrete  Continuous
3. Number of female
students in a class

Discrete  Continuous
4. Weight of male
athletes

Discrete  Continuous
5. Time needed to
finish the test

Discrete  Continuous
6. Amount of electricity
consumed when wielding

Discrete  Continuous
7. Age of a person

Discrete  Continuous
8. Number of subjects
per semester

Discrete  Continuous
9. Speed of a
motorcycle

Discrete  Continuous
10. Number of flowers
in a bouquet

Discrete  Continuous
In Summary,

Discrete or Continuous
1. Number of planets around the sun Discrete
2. Number of stars in space Continuous
3. Number of female students in a class Discrete
4. Weight of male basketball players Continuous
5. Time needed to finish the test Continuous
6. Amount of electricity consumed in wielding Continuous
7. Age of a person Continuous
8. Number of subjects per semester Discrete
9. Speed of a motorcycle Continuous
What is a discrete random variable?

 It is a variable whose value is

obtained by counting.
 Range of specified numbers is
complete, i.e. finite
 It assumes a distinct or a
separate value.
What is a continuous random variable?

 It is a variable whose value is

obtained by measuring.
 Range of specified numbers is
incomplete, i.e. infinite.
 It assumes any value between two
values.
More examples:
 Height of the SHS buildings
 Number of voters in a precinct
 Number of leaves in a tree
 Amount of paint used in an
artwork
 Number of teachers in a school
Activity 2: Create Me
 Group Activity (10 minutes)
 Make 2 examples of each random
variables (Discrete or Continuous)
 Choose a member to present your
answer in front
 Good luck!
Let’s wrap it up!
