Detailed Lesson Plan in Statistics and Probability

DLP No.: 1 Learning Area: Statistics and Probability Grade level: 11 Quarter: 1 Duration: 1 hr.
Learning M11/12SP-IIIa-1
Competency/ies: Key concepts of random variables and probability distributions M11/12SP-IIIa-2

Key Concepts/ To illustrate discrete and continuous random variable and distinguish between discrete and
Understandings to be continuous random variable.
developed
1. Objectives At the end of the lesson, 75% of the will be able to
Knowledge Identify and classify random variable.
Skills Illustrate and distinguish random variable(discrete and continuous random variable).
Attitude Explain the importance of a random variable (discrete and continuous) in everyday
life.
Values Maka-tao: Exercise independence and leadership by answering the tasks independently and
by respecting others point of view.
2. Content Random Variables and Probability Distributions
3. Learning LM’s, CG, INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
Resources
4. PROCEDURES
4.1. Introductory 1. Routinary Activities
activity 2. Giving house rules
(5 mins.) 3. Give the definition of terms

4.2. Activity/Strategy The teacher will give an activity to find out if the students really understood the
( 5mins) previous lesson.
Direction: Classify the following random variables as discrete or continuous.
1. the number of defective computers produced by a manufacturer
2. the speed of car
3. the number of female athletes
4. the time needed to finish a test
5. the weight of sugar in a cup of coffee
Answers:
1. Discrete
2. Continuous
3. Discrete
4. Continuous
5. Continuous
4.3. Analysis Each group will present their outputs in a manila and explain.
(10 mins.)
4.4. Abstraction The teacher will summarize the concept of a random variable (discrete and
(10 mins) continuous).
A random variable is a function that associates a real number to each element in the
simple space. It is a variable whose values are determined by chance.

A random variable is a discrete random variable if its set of possible outcome is

countable. Mostly, discrete random variables represent count data, such as the
number of defective chairs produced in a factory.

A random variable is a continuous random variable if it takes on values on a

continuous scale. Often, continuous random variables represent measured data, such
as heights, weights, and temperatures.

4.5. Application Direction: Classify the following random variables as discrete or continuous.
(5 mins) 1. the number of defective computers produced by a manufacturer(DISCRETE)
2. the speed of car(CONTINUOUS)
3. the number of female athletes(DISCRETE)
4. the time needed to finish a test(CONTINUOUS)
5. the weight of sugar in a cup of coffee(CONTINUOUS)
6. the number of people who are playing LOTTO each day(DISCRETE)
7. the weight of newborns each year in a hospital(CONTINUOUS)
8. the number of siblings in a number of region(DISCRETE)
9. the number of paint utilized in a building project(DISCRETE)
10. the average amount of electricity consumed per household per
month(CONTINUOUS)
Two balls are drawn in succession without replacement from an urn containing 5 red
balls and 6 blue balls. Let Z be the random variable representing the number of blue
balls. Find the values of a random variable Z. Complete the table below.
Possible Outcomes Value of the random variable Z ( number of
blue balls)

4.6. Assessment Oral Recitation:

(10 mins.) Classify the given random variable.
Finds the possible values of the random variables.

4.7. Assignment 1. Give 5 examples of each of these:

a. Discrete random variable
b. Continuous random variable

2. Compare discrete random variable and continuous random variable.

4.8. Concluding “I am trying to construct a world that maximizes the probability that Space X
Activity continues its mission without me”.

-Elon Musk-
