What is Satellite Communication?

Satellite communication is a technique of transceiving information from one place to another by the assistance
of communication satellites in orbit around the Earth. These satellites are generally man-made or (artificial)
satellite that transmits the signal via a transponder by creating a path or channel between the transmitter and
the receiver located at different sites on the Earth.
Radio, television, telephone, internet, and military applications employ satellite communications. Approx.
2000 or more than that artificial satellites are rushing 24x7 around in space.

Role of Satellite Communication in Defence(SatCom Defence)
Satellites used for military applications may also play a very important role in early
warning, intelligence, tracking and tracing surveillance, and communications,
especially in a country with diverse topography like India. Defence’s (MILSATCOM)
i.e. Military Satellite Communications comprise of ground, space and control segment
assets. This is comprises of (WNC) Wideband and Narrowband communications
satellites and services, Protected, ground infrastructure across the overseas and network
management capabilities.
The diversification in topography lays an complicated military challenges for men and
machines alike. Apart from that, tactics and operational art required to be applied in
these diverse areas demands considerable flexibility, specifically to exploit force
multipliers as satellites in different . The specific importance is the advantage that
satellites can provide in dissuasion and deterrence against the backdrop of any nation’s
offensive – defensive plans and tactics.
Satellites can even play a significant role in tracking and counter insurgency
operations spread across the mountainous and hilly regions of ground and will also
prove invaluable in mapping the uncharted jungles crowded by left wing extremists,
commonly referred to Naxals. Making Operational use of satellites would involve
consideration on three Ts of tactics, terrain and technical parameters; or else these will
end up as just a “toys for boys” in space environment. 4

Frequency Band Used in SatCom Defence

X band or SHF Satellite Communication is utilized by
military forces on a large scale for beyond line of sight
communications. X band is employed because it lay out
a compromise between the characteristics of various
frequency bands which is specifically suited to the
requirements of military users. These characteristics
incorporates terminal size, data rates, interference and
rain resilience, remote coverage and also it is reserved
for governmental use.
The frequencies range from 7.25 GHz to 7.75 GHz
(Space to Earth) and 7.9 GHz to 8.4 GHz (Earth to
Space) under which X Band Satellite Communication
operates within the part of the X band or (SHF) Super
High Frequency spectrum which is assigned by the
organization called(ITU) i.e. International
Telecommunication Union  for satellite communication.

SATCOM VS TERRESTRIAL COMM
MILITARY RELATED ADVANTAGES
Some of the advantages are as follows:

• Smaller terminals than whole terrestrial system

• Low probability of intercept or detection
• Higher degree of reliability and survivability
• Reduced logistical burdens
• Reduced siting problems
• Rapid network deployment, reconfiguration
• Easily expanded
• Flexible connectivity
• Collocated with unit for defense

Applications of SatCom in Defence

There are many applications of SatCom in defence,
Some of the most relevant applications and use cases
where SatComs can play a significant role are:

• Communication
• Remote Sensing
• Navigation
• Earth Observation Data Collection
• Weather Forecast
• Surveillance
• Remote Sensing
• Automatic Dependent Surveillance-
Broadcast
• Maritime Automatic Identification System

SatCom Defence System in India

On Dec 19, 2018, the first dedicated communication satellite
called GSAT-7A or (Angry Bird) was launched for the IAF .
Right now, GSAT-7A satellite is assisting the Indian Air Force
very productively in day hour operations. It provides
connections among various platforms like radars, helicopters,
Airborne early warning and control (AWACS) aircrafts, UAVs,
aircrafts and missile units. Around 30% of the capacity of the
GSAT-7A satellite is utilised by Indian Army.
The first military communications satellite called GSAT-7 (also
called Rukmini) launched by India is for the Indian Navy. In its
service span it is currently delivering outstanding service.
Being a multi-band military communications satellite, it can
simultaneously network around 60-70 ships and 70-80 aircraft
flawlessly. Over the Indian Ocean Region, GSAT-7 satellite has
approximately 2,000 nautical mile of ‘footprint’.
In forthcoming days ISRO may launch GSAT-7B, which could
be a multiband, military-grade communication satellite for
Army wing of defence. 9
